GOOD LUCK #1:

A FUNDRAISER FOR GIRLS ROCK! AUSTRALIA

Sunday October 8 at The Curtin in Melbourne – Facebook event

Some of country’s finest musicians, writers, comedians and podcasters are coming together for the inaugural GOOD LUCK – an all-day fundraiser for Girls Rock! Australia taking over both levels of The Curtin in Melbourne on Sunday October 8.

Girls Rock! Australia is a national network of not-for-profit camps, comprised of the established Girls Rock! Canberra, Girls Rock! Melbourne and Girls Rock! Brisbane, and Girls Rock! Wollongong and Girls Rock! Sydney which are starting in the next 12 months. Each camp is open to female, trans and gender diverse youth aged 10-17. Inspired by programs developed in the USA, the collective mission is to empower, building self-esteem and confidence by amplifying their voices through female-led music education and performance, built on principles of access and equity, social action, empowerment and community spirit. During the week, campers form bands, learn instruments, attend creative workshops and enjoy lunchtime performances from some of Australia’s coolest musicians. Names that have performed in the past include Courtney Barnett, Camp Cope, Jen Cloher, Cable Ties, Rainbow Chan and more.

Every cent raised through Good Luck #1 will go towards funding full and partial scholarships to each of the Girls Rock! Australia camps, so youth from any background can find their place and continue to grow their love of music.

The bottom level of The Curtin will become a hive of activity with comedy from triple j Lunch presenter and seasoned Comedy Festival performer Gen Fricker, pop culture talks from the author of No Way! Okay, Fine Brodie Lancaster and music and feminism writer Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen. June Jones, singer of acclaimed folk-punk band Two Steps on the Water will perform acoustic, as well as Kelso from Camp Cope in one of her first solo performances. And for the first time, Don’t Fret Club – a not-for-profit project which helps musicians and music fans talk about mental health – will be presenting a live podcast with guests to be announced. Entry to this level is free and open to the public.

Upstairs will host a straight up gig, featuring some of Melbourne’s most loved bands together with some of our most promising up and comers, playing The Curtin’s intimate stage. Performing on the day is Camp Cope, fresh off their first international tour and upcoming sold out headline show at the Corner Hotel as part of Weekender Fest, Totally Mild, the band born out of frontwomen Liz Mitchell’s solo project of the same name, who together perform perfectly skewed, disjointed pop music that sounds as though it was handed down from the heavens, and Hachiku – the Detroit born, Germany raised and now Melbourne-based musician who was discovered by Courtney Barnett whilst in Europe in 2015.

They will be joined by two very special new bands on the scene – boats, a new folk-grunge band formed by four trans musicians who use accordion, cello and three-part vocal harmonies to sing about trauma, gender feelings, relationships, floods and the ocean, and Lubulwa who perform dreamy, spaced-up music headed up with devastating, soaring vocals from Peter Lubulwa. They are currently writing their debut album which is due for release in early 2018. Tickets for the upstairs show are on sale now through The Curtin and they won’t last.
