This new track is accompanied by a stunning choreographed video by Emma Martin, which sees Estère twist her way around various physical obstacles, including an army of pink pastel doors. The effortless and entrancing new clip was filmed in the lush surroundings of the Waitakere Ranges, and was directed by Alexander Gandar (Humans) and produced by Billie Ruck. Estère says “My movement
[in the video] sometimes comes across a bit unpolished, gawky – which I think rings true to this idea of ownership and just doing what you would naturally do in your own body. It’s not about being the best.”

Recorded at her home studio in a suburban 40’s Wellington villa, the self-produced, self-recorded album, MY DESIGN, ON OTHERS’ LIVES capitalises on the weighty drums and encompassing melody of electronic music. By fusing it with warm acoustic textures that are paired with the ethereal side of jazz-pop melodies throughout the album, it is clear how Estère earned herself the genre title of ‘Electric Blue Witch-Hop’.

“I’ve always been fascinated by other people. But there was a period in my life where I went a little crazy. I was coping with a variety of stresses and there was a traumatic incident that left me feeling disconnected and literally out of my body for a couple of months. I was really terrified I was going to stay feeling like that forever. But during that period of detachment from myself it was like I became more connected to other things. I read a list of autobiographies and philosophy books, I experienced the world differently and after coming out of that state – I became terminally interested in the lives’ of others.”

From humble beginnings, Estère’s self-titled debut album received extensive radio play on stations throughout New Zealand and featured on various international blogs including Portals, Disco Naiveté, and her track “Pro Bono Techno Zone” being added to Afro Punk’s playlist ’15 #blackgirlmagic songs from 2017′. MY DESIGN, showcased the single “Control Freak” which was premiered on Rolling Stone, along with the track “Grandmother” with its accompanying music video being premiered on Music Feeds. The NZ songstress now gives us lead single and video for “Rent” from her forthcoming double album MY DESIGN, ON OTHERS’ LIVES.

Be sure to check out “Rent”, out NOW, and keep an eye out for Estère’s two-part work MY DESIGN, ON OTHERS’ LIVES out Friday, 27th April 2018!

“Control Freak” is a thunderous, rhythm-led track…Attitude not only matched by the punchy composition but also Estère’s own unflinching declarations that she “knows how to be cruel.” Rolling Stone

“Music and anthropology might seem worlds apart, but they’re the perfect combination for Dalton, who has incorporated the study of people and cultures into her songs.” The Wellingtonian
