For the first time, we looked into how many people listened to triple j’s Hottest 100. And it’s a LOT.

After moving the countdown to a new date and receiving the most Hottest 100 votes EVER (a record-busting 2.35+ million votes) we wanted to see how many people tuned in on Saturday 27 January to enjoy the countdown. Because of the way radio ratings are surveyed, we’ve only ever received a snapshot of how many people tune into the Hottest 100 as part of a longer, averaged period rather than a single day. So, this year, we commissioned research into listening over the Hottest 100 Weekend.

We’re stoked to learn that 19% of Australians aged 16 and over listened to the Hottest 100 – that’s 3.34 million people!

  • 19% or 3.34m of 16+ Australians listened to triple j’s Hottest 100 live on Sat 27 Jan

  • 30% of 18-34s Australians listened to triple j’s Hottest 100 live on Sat 27 Jan

  • 71% listened with others, tuning in on radio, online, streaming and more

Additionally, there were a whopping 2.8 million streams across the day – that’s three times higher than last year’s countdown. At its peak, there were 254,000 simultaneous streams of the Hottest 100 (just behind last year’s 258,000 peak), making it arguably the biggest streaming radio event worldwide.

triple j listeners also helped raise a grand total of $250,000 for AIME during this year’s Hottest 100, equalling the amount raised the previous year. When combined with the $100,000 raised in the first year of our three-year partnership, over $600,000 will go towards helping Indigenous kids through high school and into university, training and employment.

Survey Methodology: Online Quantitative study of n=1871 Australians aged 16 – 75 yrs., with strict quotas on age, gender and location, making it a statistically robust reflection of behaviour across the Australian population on the day. Research was conducted by ABC Audience Data and Insights between January 30 and February 8, 2018.
