“Rothman is like Ariel Pink if he joined Odd Future … Rothman reaches deep and low – think Tyler, the Creator if he was an R&B loverman, or Leonard Cohen doing 808s and Heartbreak”
– The Guardian UK

“The haunted croons of Lawrence Rothman feel like taking an Oxy after an evening of drinking beer and putting on a Bob Dylan record on a turntable whose belt is running a little slow… It’s fucking good.”
– Noisey

“Lawrence Rothman specializes in eccentric R&B that has the potential to rival Grimes”
– NME

“Shapeshifting pop merchant..”

Los Angeles songwriter/producer/artist and chameleon Lawrence Rothman has today released a new song and video Ain’t Afraid of Dying feat. Marissa Nadler with Carla Azar from Autolux on drums. It’s latest track to be revealed from his forthcoming debut album The Book of Law due October 13th via Downtown/Interscope Records which features some of the most unique factions of players seen contributing to one project including Pino Palladino (D’Angelo, NIN, The Who), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses), Dennis Hamm (Thundercat) and How To Dress Well.

Rothman has nine alter egos and is often described as the Cindy Sherman of music. The alters are a part of Lawrence and are physically manifested within their videos and live shows. Directed by the revered Floria Sigismondi (David Bowie, Björk, Marilyn Manson, Justin Timberlake, The Handmaids Tale), and premiered on The Fader, this video features the alter Hooky with a cameo by Marissa Nadler. More information on his alters will be revealed in coming months.

Rothman wrote the Leonard Cohen-esque Ain’t Afraid of Dying the day after he learned his best friend was dying of a rare disease. During their final conversation, Lawrence’s friend said, “I might be off on my timing but I ain’t afraid of dying.”

Produced by Justin Raisen (Sky Ferreira, Angel Olsen, Charli XCX, Health, Kim Gordon) along with producer YVES and Lawrence Rothman, the dark and triumphant The Book of Law is an incredibly personal body of work about struggle and discovery of oneself, evident in first single Wolves Still Cry.

Though multi instrumentalist Rothman played many of the instruments himself on the album, he and Raisen were able to recruit the talents of Dennis Hamm (Thundercat, Flying Lotus) on piano, Pino Paladino and Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) on bass along with Carla Azar (Autolux) and Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) on drums. He had no relationship with any of these musicians prior to the recording of the album. They were all cold called by Raisen after late night recording sessions by the two dreaming and lamenting on who would be best for certain songs.
