Sydney song-smith Patrick James has taken an adventurous turn with the release of new single Lay It Down; an electrifying pop song with elevated synths, infectious guitars and a heated dose of Phil Collin’s inspired percussion.

To celebrate the release of Lay It Down, Patrick James will be playing two special shows in Sydney and Melbourne through September.

Lay It Down is the first new music Australia has heard from Patrick James since his gorgeous debut album Outlier featuring hit tracks California Song, Bugs and Covered In Rain.

The creative process for Lay It Down was unfamiliar territory for Patrick, where he utilized a lot of sounds and instruments to create something that was new but still recognizably Patrick James.

“Throughout the entire writing and recording of the song I didn’t pick up the acoustic guitar once, which was strange at first but ultimately gave a new feel and vibe to the music. It’s bigger and bolder,” said Patrick.

This new sound was reached with the help of acclaimed producer Ben McCarthy (Gordi, Alex The Astronaut) who brought harmonized influences and clear process to the table.

“Working with Ben definitely brought out the best arrangement for the song. The percussion in the recording ultimately took my train of thought into a new musical world. I felt like he was great in helping me articulate the direction I was trying to go,” said Patrick.

A trip across the UK with the incredible trio Bears Den on their sold out tour would also provide the final, perfect piece of inspiration for Lay It Down.

Davie, the singer from Bears Den, told me that my piano playing reminded him a lot of Bruce Hornsby. The name only sounded familiar at first, I didn’t know most of his work outside of The Way It Is, but now I can definitely Hornsby was a strong influence,” said Patrick.

.

Patrick James follows a well-established formula of instrumental builds and breaks, but has the remarkable ability to make it sound fresh. Yes, there are spectacular harmonies, but purely describing Patrick James as an ‘indie folk artist’ doesn’t quite do him or his music justice.”- Gemma Bastiani, The AU Review
