Atlanta rapper 6LACK finally brought his FREE 6LACK tour to Australia, almost a year after the release of his debut album. On tour with hip-hop heavyweights Migos, 6LACK took some time out to perform two shows of his own in Sydney and Melbourne. Already making the most of his time in Australia, 6LACK raised the hype surrounding his inaugural Australian tour with an appearance on triple j’s ‘Like A Version’ segment. The rapper surprised with a stripped back, slow version of RnB/soul icon Erykah Badu’s On & On, which received huge praise from the revered artist herself.

Joining 6LACK at Melbourne’s 170 Russell was electronic-leaning RnB artist George Maple. The support form a George comes at an exciting time for the singer, as she is just days away from the release of her debut album, Lovers. George performed multiple cuts from her new album, including the recently released Hero and Everybody Here Wants You, along with favourites such as Talk Talk. If any of the audience were unaware of George prior to the show, they definitely knew her now.

As 6LACK’s band made their way to the stage, the jam-packed 170 Russell made a deafening noise. Without main man’s presence, the band hyped the crowd by playing DRAM and Lil Yachty’s massive hit Broccoli, sending the venue into raptures. It wasn’t long before the crowd took it to a new level though, as 6LACK entered the 170 Russell stage. Wearing his recognizable black beanie down to his eyebrows, 6LACK kicked the show off with FREE 6LACK opener Never Know. Introducing himself, 6LACK ensured everyone in the room knew who he was: “6LACK pronounced BLACK. B-L-A-C-K. Not 6-LACK. BLACK with a 6. 6LACK.”

6LACK’s latest single, That Far, received a huge sing-a-long from the crowd, which was no surprise as it’s been absolutely smashed on triple j since it’s release. Not only was the audience reciting each word of ‘That Far’, although about 95% of 170 Russell were filming the song on their phones. I felt like the only person who was actually watching 6LACK, rather than filming it. Yeah, the song is great and the live performance was even better, but sometimes you’ve got to put your phone away and enjoy the show.

A pause of the show as an iPhone ringtone echoed around 170 Russell signalled the beginning of another obvious crowd favourite, Ex Calling. As soon as that ringtone started, everyone knew what song was next. However, Ex Calling was trumped in popularity by encore track PRBLMS, which was performed by a shirtless 6LACK. After an hour on-stage, 6LACK again bounced around the stage for the song, making it the most memorable rendition of the night.
