‘AMNplify Snapshot’:

Candi Carpenter

CANDI CARPENTER Facebook Burn The Bed Country

CANDI CARPENTER

.

Candi Carpenter’s debut track, Burn the Bed showcases her as country music’s next young talent to take the world by storm. The Ohio, U.S. born girl’s sorrow is palpable as she demands to know the details of her husband’s affair. The sharp bite of her questions contrasts the song’s seductive pace and instrumentation. “Burn the Bed” is a stormy, moody country song that will hit too close to home for some. Men will feel guilty for sins they have not yet committed.

How would you describe your journey in the music industry so far, and where do you want to go from here with your music?

My journey has never been dull. It’s been unpredictable, rewarding, and even scary at times, but I’ve learned a lot along the way. I want to be a force for good in this industry and use the pain I’ve experienced in life as a way to help others.

.

When did you know you wanted to make music and perform as your career?

It sounds so strange, but I’ve always known. I wrote my first song when I was three years old. It was a terrible song, but I was already trying to create music. I watched a lot of movies and TV shows about singers getting discovered in everyday places. I assumed it was true, so as a little girl I used to sing loudly in public, and walk up to the fanciest looking people I could find to ask them if they were record producers. This happened a lot at Cracker Barrel, and my parents were always really embarrassed.

.

Who have been your musical influences through life?

My Grandfather, Ray Burt, was my first big musical influence. He was an amazing steel guitar player, and he first introduced me to country music. Grand Ole Opry Star Jack Greene took me on as his duet partner when I was 16 years old. Having the opportunity to grow up backstage at the Grand Ole Opry on the weekends, and tour the country performing with icons and legends like Little Jimmy Dickens, Porter Wagoner, and Jeannie Seely was my version of high school.

.

Are there any artists or musicians that you have been so impacted by that it changed your view on life or mentality?

I was one of the many little girls who wanted to be the next LeAnn Rimes. When I heard her on the radio for the first time, I realized that a career in music was truly an option for me, and decided to learn to yodel just like she did. I started listening to a band called Riders In The Sky and imitating the way Ranger Doug yodeled. The first time I met him, I nearly fainted.

.

How would you describe your sound, and why is it unique from other artist’s sound?

My sound is a mixture of traditional country, gospel, rock, and vintage pop. Imagine Chris Stapleton, Janis Joplin, Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Aretha Franklin, Merle Haggard, and Stevie Nicks having a party with a church choir. It gets wild and out of control.

What can fans expect from your live shows? And for people who aren’t fans yet why should they come to one of your live shows?

I try to deliver a performance that’s as good, if not better, than the record. I leave everything I am on that stage.

.

What has been one of your most memorable live performances, and why?

When I was a teenager, I played with Loretta Lynn at her ranch in Hurricane Mills, TN. She stood behind me on-stage the entire time I sang, and actually hyped the audience for me. LORETTA LYNN was my hype-woman at her own concert! What an incredible lady.

.

Do you have plans for 2018 after everything that’s happening now, or will you let things happen naturally and see where your music takes you?

I have a lot of big plans for 2018! I have to keep them under wraps for now, but I’m dying to share them with you soon.

.

If you weren’t working in the music industry, what else do you think you would be doing with your life right now?

I’ve never had a plan B. I think that’s why I was able to stick it out for the 20 years it took me to land a record deal. The music industry is so tough sometimes, and I was worried I’d take that second path if things got too hard. I really do love dinosaurs though, and I might have wanted to be a paleontologist if things had worked out differently.

What’s one song fans might be surprised you really like?

MMMBOP by Hanson.

.

Do you have one live show that stands out so far as being your favorite, or most memorable, why?

When I was 11, my mom took me to hear Terri Clark and Vince Gill at the Jackson County Fair. I decided to crash the concert. I wrote a note to Vince on the back of my ticket stub. It read,

“Can I yodel for you? – Your Fan, Candace.”,

He actually brought me up on stage to sing with his band, and it was the greatest day of my life. I’m still his biggest fan.

.

If you could collaborate with one artist that is no longer alive, who would it be? And why?

I would love to howl out a duet with Janis Joplin. I also wish I could record another song with my mentor, Jack Greene. I wish he was here to see what I’m doing now.

.

Lastly, just for fun – If you had to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

Cheese. I choose cheese. Actually, I think cheese chose me.
