How would you describe your journey in the music industry so far, and where do you want to go from here with your music?

So far our journey has been fantastically diverse – not only our opportunities on stage getting to open for bands like The Delta Riggs, but working with different venues, promoters, producers and more! It’s also given us the opportunity to work with those outside of music specifically, like our beer with All Inn Brewing. It would be amazing to take our music on the road and tour more, but we’re also definitely keeping our eyes and ears open to new opportunities to make our own path through this industry.

How would you sum up 2017 in regards to your development as a band?

I think early this year we learned some hard lessons about how we played live and where we focused our energy. 2017 really has been a year of doubling down to make the most out of every single show, and we’re working hard to make sure that every time we step off the stage we do so knowing it was our best show so far. We’re also gelling as a band, and we’ve figured out processes in the things we do that work best for the band as well as us individually. This time in the studio we went in with a solid plan and knowing what everyone in the band was doing. We wound up with a great balance between working and having a good time as a band.

When did you know you wanted to make music and perform as your career?

Antii: I’ve played guitar & bass for a long time, but it wasn’t until I was reaching the end of uni and starting to see more local Brisbane music that I realised making music and not just playing an instrument was a real possibility.

Felix: I’m the only musician in my family, but from a young age I was introduced to a wide range of musical influences blasting from my dad’s car stereo. Since I first started playing in bands in 2013 I have been addicted to the life. It’s a tough occupation to succeed and make a living out of, but I do it for the love.

Rachit: Music is what got me through school, and gives me balance outside of my current day job. I think the feel of performing on stage and the intricacies of studio production have in the last few years really made me want to spend as much time as possible making music!

Who have been your musical influences through life?

As a band we’re fairly diverse in our influences – Paul is a classically-trained guitarist and was brought up around a lot of Vivaldi, Bach, and Beethoven. In contrast, Felix definitely had a lot more of The Rolling Stones and The Clash etc. Rachit and Antii are both influenced by acts like Queens of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, and The Black Keys.

Are there any artist’s or musicians that you have been so impacted by that it changed your view on life or mentality?

Felix: Rodriguez, his Cold Facts album changed my life. I was sitting under a tree in Stones Corner, letting the world happen around me, as I listened to the album start to finish. The words resonated through me and I was overwhelmed with a new sense of reality. I took with me a pen and pad with the intention of writing down some new ideas, but the pen didn’t work. Next time.

How would you describe your sound, and why is it unique from other artist’s sound?

We’ve always endeavored not to take things at face value when developing our sound. We have a band where our bassist is a stunningly talented guitarist, our guitarist who built the core of their musical skill on bass, and two guitarists that are constantly swapping roles so we don’t really have a ‘lead’ or ‘rhythm’ part. The only way we’ve managed to keep from total chaos is to keep our sound very carefully segmented. By twisting our experiences together we’re able to build a bigger sound.

What can fans expect from your live shows, and for people who aren’t fans yet why should they come to one of your live shows?

Our live shows have always been a chance to dance and rock out. If you’ve never seen us before, watch out for Felix when he puts his guitar down and gets the microphone in hand… you never where he might end up when he’s been untethered! We try to get him to keep his shirt on, but that’s easier said than done.

What has been one of your most memorable live performances, and why?

Getting to play a packed out ‘Zoo in Brisbane, opening for The Delta Riggs, was amazing. We got so much energy from the crowd and we made sure to return it all as best we could.

Do you have plans for 2018 after everything that’s been going on this year, or will you let things happen naturally and see where your music takes you?

A little bit of both. We’re always on the lookout for new opportunities and planning our next moves, but we try to keep it open enough to take advantage of anything good that comes our way too!

If you weren’t working in the music industry, what else do you think you would be doing with your life right now?

We all have different hobbies and skills. Felix has said he’d like to find another way to make people laugh, Antii has an eye for design, Rachit is into startups, and Paul likes baking. Perhaps some sort of well-designed startup oven product that bakes you bread and tells you jokes!?

What’s one song fans might be surprised you really like?

Antii: Given how diverse and accessible music has become, I’m not sure if any artist or song would be really surprising but I figure not as many would expect Son Lux’s Dream State to appear on my Hottest 100 vote this year.

Rachit: I’m not huuuge listener of many folk, but I absolutely love Jose Gonzalez!

Do you have one live show that stands out so far as being your favourite, or most memorable, why?

We mentioned The Delta Riggs gig, but we’re really enjoying the spread of gigs we’re playing. Recently we played an intimate stripped back set at The End in support of Support Act, but before that played an absolutely wild Brisbane house party in a tiny room with heaps of energy!

If you could collaborate with one artist that is no longer alive, who would it be? And why?

Felix: Amy Winehouse. I have always been a massive fan of her music, her intense connection with the songs that she wrote and how she performed is something that inspires me. She was a true artist.

Antii: Freddie Mercury. His musical vision and showmanship would make any project a wild ride.

Lastly, just for fun – If you had to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

Felix: Scotch, dry and lime.

Rachit: Scotch, nice and neat.
