ANGUS & JULIA STONE

@ The Tivoli

21/09/2017 (Live Review)

.

Australian sibling folk-rock duo Angus & Julia Stone broke big with their 2010 sophomore album, Down The Way. The album debuted at number one in Australia, took home five ARIA music awards, and saw them tour their music worldwide. On the heels of their success, the famously shy duo began to pursue solo work but fans rejoiced when the duo announced their first tour in years to promote their new album SNOW.

The Tivoli, Brisbane was SOLD OUT for Angus & Julia’s first leg of their SNOW tour and I could tell when I arrived at the venue and the line stretched around a corner further than I could see. The support act came to stage around 7.30pm introducing themselves with a smooth, “We’re this little band called Vancouver Sleep Clinic” and went straight into their distorted, dreamy set. Immediately the 5-piece group of Brisbane locals made the stage their own and for a moment it really felt like they were the headline. I am a fan of Vancouver Sleep Clinic as well so I was pleased when they did a blend of old and new material, and even chucked in a fun cover of Hold On We’re Going Home by Drake.

In front of the main stage, the crowd was filling in moving closer for the main act and at approximately 9.00pm Angus & Julia Stone took to the stage as a duo for the first time in a long time!

The people around me were a good indication of the different emotions fans of the aussie folk duo were feeling; one punter was crying, many were screaming, and everyone was pushing me to get a closer look. Without a word, they go straight into a track from new album SNOW, Make It Out Alive which made me remember why I adore them. They have this beautiful ability to create intimate, folk music with poignant lyrics that contain bittersweet, poetic juxtapositions about life and love. Watching them continue to bring the new album to life on stage with tracks like Oakwood and Chateau I could feel the calming energy of love and music in the room, with fans young and old singing along softly enough that I could still hear the softer tones to Angus & Julia’s raspy vocals.

The duo did not forget to pay tribute to older hits like, A Heartbreak, which saw the venue fall to complete silence. Other old tracks For You and Big Jet Plane were both sing-a-long moments and Julia stopped briefly just to say that she draws inspiration for all she does from LOVE. That being one of the few things either of them said most of the set.

Angus did have a solo track where he played Uptown Folk from Dope Lemon’s recent album, Honey Bones. One of my personal favourites from that album, but it is nothing like Angus & Julia material. Dope Lemon music is more of a bluesy/1960s rock folk sound, paired with his crisp vocals accompanied by drums and electric guitar it is enchanting to watch live.

Angus & Julia Stone close the show with a few more old tracks from the album, Down The Way and then they humbly exit the stage with soft-spoken goodbyes. Australia really is full of incredible talent, and this gig was proof of that.
