The internet has proven time and time again to be the best marketplace for indie music. Ashtin Larold, with the humble brag of 168K subscribers and 25 million views, is no exception.

The South Jersey rapper has come far from his high school rap battles, evolving into a full-time musician with a pursuit of the passion he places second to none. His most recent single, Grew Up, produced by Caliberbeats, is a vulnerable reflection rarely seen within the genre.

Aging is a joyous process. We grow, we learn, and we inevitably lose.

Larold places all his focus on the latter in this track. Grew Up showcases Larold’s abilities beyond just rapping. His mellow vocals in accompaniment of the acoustic guitar and rhythmic drums create a sombre yet catchy piece.

One of his greatest skills remains his lyricism. While specifically about the departure from childhood innocence and adolescent bliss, there is an open extension to the emotional common ground of good memories with friends. Larold voices the bitter in bittersweet, acknowledging growth as a painful process in its own right.

Lonely reminiscence. The desire to go back. The pain of treasured memories with treasured people coming to an end. This isn’t said alone in his music. This is heard. This is shared and this is felt.

The level of maturity present in this song leaves you longing for more. Watch Ashtin Larold closely this year – his bright future is still beginning to shine.
