After the release of their fourth record ‘Celebrate the Lie’ on February 16th, punk rockers Born Lion started a tour of four major Australian cities with Melbourne band Captives.

Following their gig at The Flaming Galah in Brisbane, Born Lion and Captives made their way to the Chippo Hotel in Sydney for the last tour date, along with Rick Dangerous and Vetty Vials.

Vetty Vials (and the Sandpit Turtles) started off the night, bringing an emo tinged folk sense to the room. Despite the muffled sound, Vetty’s vocals were sharp and were able to loosen the early crowd, coupled with soothing acoustic strums.

Next up Rick Dangerous (and the Silkie Bantams) took to the stage. The energy coming from Rick and the rest of the band was obnoxiously good, as Rick stood amongst the crowd, jumping all over the place, starting off the first lot of head banging that followed throughout the rest of the night. Dressed in suits, the four spun the building crowd into a frenzy with their abusively addictive music, setting up the punters well for the rest of the night.

After a 15 minute break, Melbourne band Captives emerged with a high energy set, building up a larger crowd to interact with. New single ‘Paint it in Blue’ twisted the venue’s atmosphere with punchy drum beats and ripping vocals from frontman Aaron Damon. Throughout the set, Captives teased with new songs set to be released later this year on their debut album ‘Over the Rainbow’, setting the scene for what will be a great year for the group, being ones to watch for this coming year in Australian music.

To finish off the night, Born Lion ripped into single ‘Evil K’, that was a shoe in for Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2017. ‘D for Danger’ introduced punters to electric riffs and vocals so gripping you’d want to start a mosh.

Sixth track ‘Highs and Lows’ dove into the best of new album ‘Celebrate the Lie’, chucking a boisterous energy over the crowd with a steady drum beat and crescendo riffs.

‘Shadows’ was soon after played, and seems to be the standout on the new album. With chord progressions that are similar to that of modern rockers King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, it is no doubt one to become a hit for 2018.

To end the night, Born Lion finished with ‘No Connection’, also off the newly released album. With recognisable lyrics and gripping drum patterns, the song demands a response, and with that, Born Lion received one, likely a premonition for a successful year ahead.
