Chase The Sun

It’s a rare act that can dispense with the services of a support act entirely and instead knock out two sets on their own. Chase the Sun are that rare act.

A power trio made up of guitarist Jan Rynsaadt, bassman Ryan Van Gennip and drummer Jon Howell,  Chase the Sun are a force unto themselves. They might just be the most underrated band in the country.

Rynsaadt’s skills as a guitarist are nothing short of miraculous and his slide work is revolutionary. Perhaps most impressive is his ability to showcase his skills almost completely devoid of ego. Rynsaadt’s humility as a performer is matched only by his ability to blend his extraordinary work seamlessly with that of his bandmates. Incidentally, his bandmates, particularly Van Gennip might be the only musicians in the scene who could keep up with him. Van Gennip is a master; his solos display a rare technical ability but he’s also committed enough to the music to subsume that within the band’s sound as a whole.

Gigs at the German club are an interesting experience. It’s a lowkey place but with an enormous room. The crowd is generally an older one, but that doesn’t stop them from hitting the dancefloor when the mood strikes.

Tonight, Chase the Sun mix tracks from 2007’s self-titled record, 2010’s Rednecks & Gentlemen and the newest album, yet to be released. Officially the band are touring the latest single from that record ‘Aint no Love’, but in reality Chase the Sun are a touring band. Doing it live is what they do best and tonight they burn the fucking house down. Their show is completely no bullshit. They play and they play hard; there is minimal banter and very few niceties. There are just a couple of hours of blistering blues, scorching melodies and surprisingly nuanced vocal work. Chase the Sun are a great live band who give a great live performance and if tonight’s new material is anything to go by, the upcoming album release promises to be something way out.
