Cursed Earth took over Sydney last night at Oxford Art Factory Gallery Bar. The Perth band hit the stage for their ‘Cycles of Grief’ Australian tour and showed the crowd exactly what they are about and what this album stands for. The night started with local Sydney supporting acts Burning Season, Lo! and Shackles, each drawing in the crowd and giving us a taste of what was to come for the remainder of the night.

Just before their set, each member of Cursed Earth arranged their gear and prepared for sound check. That alone was impressive and a hint of what the audience was in for. As the metal fans waited patiently for their final dose of hardcore sounds you couldn’t help but notice the recurring dress code of various band tees amongst the crowd. A solid indication of the true hardcore music fanatics within the room.

Throughout the set, Cursed Earth performed tracks from their two-part Cycles of Grief EP. Volume 1: Growth and Volume 2: Decay, each with a motif and depiction of trauma within humanity and the confines of an individual’s circumstance.

After forming in Perth in 2013, the band has continuously evolved their experimental sound into what it is today; hardcore, political and raw. Front-woman Jazmin Luders kept up her razor-edged vocals and aggressive persona which coincided perfectly with guitarists Kieran Molloy and Paul Cottrell, bassist Robert Owen and drummer Sam Forward. Luders stepped into the attempted circle pit making eye contact with the true supporters, who evidently knew the lyrics as she passed the mic over for the fans to sing along. The set included hit tracks Regression, Regret, Exhausted and Eternal, each a clear indication of the diversity within their sound of stomping riffs, percussion, experimental song structure, melodic tones and drum base bursts of double-kick.

The Aussie band will finish off their final tour of the year back in their home city this month. The only downfall to the Sydney gig? It was only a thirty-minute set. By the looks of it, there was a hell of a lot more violent dance moves left within the audience members. That being said, everyone showed their true appreciation for their crazy tunes at the end of the night. Perhaps a longer set next time guys? Sweet!
