GHOULS – ‘Internet Famous’ (Single Review)

UK-based alt-punk rockers GHOULS will unleash their new single Internet Famous on 9 February and it encapsulates a highly relevant theme. GHOULS front man, Benedict Goold says “…I have more time, better perspectives, less anxiety and less care for where I go and what you do…we get so caught up in the virtual that it’s easy to forget that there is real beauty in real- life activity”. The powerful track follows on from the band’s latest album, Run.

The release should tide Australian fans over, with the quintet of Benedict Goold (vocals/guitar), Sam Mussell (bass), Ben Maz (saxophone), Russel Spencer (trombone) and Jay Swinstead (drums) hitting Australian shores for the first time this April on their ‘No Better Place To Be’ co-headline tour with Melbourne’s FOXBLOOD.

At first, staccato drums and guitar thump along to short and sharp vocals before giving way to a much more melodic chorus section throughout the chorus, complete with harmonies that gives the track real texture. The addition of the saxophone and trombone is different for the genre, but for GHOULS it oozes class. It is unfair to make comparisons, but its Blink 182 crossed with Arctic Monkeys on this track.

Whilst this track is upbeat and melodic, it only strengthens the message behind the song. It is clear from the one listen that GHOULS are a socially conscious band and everyone can relate to spending too much time on social media to the point that it becomes all consuming. In a world of sameness in the music industry, GHOULS are reminding us that the virtual world has its place but the real world is much more important.
