Interview with BONNIE FRASER – Vocalist for STAND ATLANTIC – 11/07/2017
Bonnie Fraser (vocalist and guitar), David Potter (bass) and Jono Panichi (drums) make up the alternative pop/punk, female lead Sydney band Stand Atlantic. Only two years into their music career as a band the trio recently announced signing with Rude Records and have announced a new EP Sidewinder (pre-order here) to be released September 15, 2017.
.
“We feel so lucky to be in the hands of the Rude Records family, they’ve been nothing but supportive and passionate from day one!” – Stand Atlantic.
.
Vocalist Bonnie from the band took the time to talk to AMNplify about their recent label signing, the forthcoming EP Sidewinder and the first single release from the EP Coffee At Midnight.
.
“The song is about that feeling of desperately trying to cling onto something or someone vs. finally letting go and realising that maybe it just wasn’t that great in the first place.”– Bonnie, vocalist.

Have a read of the interview below!!
.
Tell me a bit about how Stand Atlantic got together?
Yeah, so basically I met Potter [David] our bassist through a music college we went together too. Then we were playing under a different name as a different band, but then we just wanted to start fresh. So we got Jonno [drummer] and became a three-piece, started Stand Atlantic and here we are.
.
And you guys recently signed with Rude Records, how has it been working with an international label?
Yeah, we only signed with them at the start of this year so it’s all heaps new to us and it’s just been going really well. So much better than we ever thought it would be, so we’re just over the moon at the moment.
.
Have they been a good support system?
Yep, they are absolutely so passionate! And yeah it’s just really cool knowing you have a bunch of people who back you and look out for you. It’s really nice.
.
.
Stand Atlantic has just released a new single Coffee at Midnight from the forthcoming EP Sidewinder – Can you tell me a bit about the creative process for the new track?
It started off as just a demo. Me and our bassist [David Potter] wrote it and took it into the studio with our producer [Stevie Knight] and we changed a couple of things. It is one of the funkiest songs on the EP so we definitely wanted to lead with that as our new music.
.
So does Coffee At Midnight reflect what the rest of the EP sounds like?
It’s all pretty much that style. We really try to blend the pop and punk, we like to take influence from the really aggressive side of pop/punk and obviously, all our melodies are poppy and hooky so songs you can remember. I’d definitely say Coffee at Midnight is a snapshot of what the rest of the EP will be like.
.
Was it fun creating and filming the music video that was released with it?
Yeah, it was. We weren’t there for the filming of the story line, but the performance part of it with the band was so smooth. It just took one day in this house, Potter [bassist] broke a lightbulb and we didn’t say anything and tried to mask it haha. It was really cool to see how Kieran [music video director] works because he’s got a really cool style and we always wanted to work with him. So yeah, it was a really cool experience.
.
.
What are yours and the band’s musical influences?
Personally, I am in love with pop music. It’s so cool, and some people bag on it for being too simple but there is an art to writing music that people connect to and making it sound simple, and selling millions of records. There’s a guy called Black Bear in the states who I think has written songs for Bieber and he’s like a producer but he’s got his own album and I am like obsessed with him. I really like Frank Ocean and a lot of like poppy stuff. On the pop/punk side, we definitely draw influences from The Story So Far and Knuckle Puck.
.
What song on the forthcoming EP Sidewinder do you connect with most and why?
Oh, that’s a good question. I think the track Sidewinder is my favourite; that was the first song we wrote for the EP. I just remember when we were with our producer and we gave it a little acoustic run-through, and then we all just looked around the room like ‘that was cool’. So that one just holds a special place in my heart I think.
.
Where can fans catch you perform in the near future?
We’ve got a couple of shows coming up, but I don’t know if I can say too much yet. We will be announcing them soon and you will be able to find out all over our socials. Everything’s just @standatlantic.
