Indie-rock band CREO have recently been gaining attention with their cathartic EP, Subtitles For X,Y,Z. In this interview, they chat to AMNplify about the process of creating this record, their recent music video and their upcoming Australian tour!

.

.

First-off, I just wanna say that Subtitles For X,Y,Z is such a huge song! The guitar tone and lyrics pull me in and the production is incredible. I imagine it’d be great live, is it a crowd pleaser?

Thanks! Yeah it is of those tracks that the crowd seems to pick up on first listen. We’ve actually been playing live Subtitles for a while now and hoped that the response it gets live would be an indicator of how it would go as a release.  It’s become a bit of an anthem for our live set.

.

The video for your latest single, Subtitles For X,Y,Z, was shot in an abandoned school. How did that come about?

We were really struggling with location ideas until our incredible director Rod suggested this abandoned school he’s done some work at before.  Then as soon as we saw it, the video came together quite naturally.  The song is about letting go of insecurities and escaping those paralyzing thoughts we sometimes set on ourselves.  So apocalyptic nature of the setting is symbolic of those thoughts, and there I am trying to find a way out.

.

What was the writing/recording process like for this ep?

It was definitely a slow and sometimes frustrating process, but one I felt we needed to go through.  We really made a conscious effort to create something that truly reflected who we are as a band, and our journey thus far.  It was a very cathartic experience and allowed us to process some of the things we’ve struggled with as a group and personally.  I guess that’s why there is a strong sense of emotion playing throughout all the songs.

The songs have heaps of detail and depth to them. Had you been working on them for a long time?

Some songs like ‘June’ and ‘Subtitles’ took a lot longer to come together and there were about 10 different versions of those songs, whilst Behind the Beat, Give Me Yours and Too Many came together quite naturally.  I think what takes time is creating all the intricate subtleties in color and emotion that aren’t in the forefront of the track.  Although we are a Rock and Roll band at heart, we take a very cinematic approach to recording.  There are no synths or keyboards on this EP whatsoever, every bit of white noise or unorthodox sound is created on a guitar.  We pride ourselves on being a guitar band, and this EP was no exception.

.

A song that I particularly like off the EP is Behind The Beat, could you tell me a bit about that one?

Behind the Beat actually came together rather quickly. I remember playing an E chord on the guitar and just started rambling over the top.  The rambling eventually turned into this biographical recount of the ups and downs of growing up to this point, which turned into the song as we know it today.  A lot of the guitar parts on that song were actually recorded as a demo.  We could never better or even replicate the same vibe they had so we used them on the final recording.

.

All your songs seem to have a pretty consistent style – does the whole band have a similar taste in music?

We all share a love for rock and roll, that’s for sure but we definitely bring our own differing influences to the table.  I’m a huge lover of Americana folk, where as Dan brings forward metal and hardcore influences.  I think we’ve naturally just developed a cohesive sound that showcases our common and different influences in one.

.

.

You’re going on tour soon to support the EP, are you keen?

Super keen! We’re a live band at heart, so we’re really excited to play the songs off the EP to people around the country!

.

There are some great local support acts on this upcoming tour. Who are some local artists you’ve been listening to lately?

There are a bunch of wicked local bands banging things out at the moment.  Our favorites would have to be Dave from Newcastle.  They are raucous, and full of energy, write banging tunes and the best bunch of lads.

.

What does CREO have planned for the rest of the year?

After this run of shows we head back into our studio and start demoing up some new material! We’ll be back on the recording horse again, hopefully with something ready to put out by early 2018.
