Interview with Kim Benzie of DEAD LETTER CIRCUS

Dead Letter Circus released their long-awaited single While You Wait this week and are about to head around the country on their national tour. On the same day as his child was due to be born, lead vocalist Kim Benzie made time in his schedule to chat to AMNplify’s Pauli Dee.

Pauli: The new single While You Wait is out now. Can you tell us a bit about the song?

Kim: We chose this one because it was a massive step away from our signature sound which we are renowned for and we thought it was time to show a different side. While it’s not an indication of the entire sound of the album it does showcase how far we’ve pushed the envelope within the 10 songs.

Pauli: It’s your first official release in a little while. What have you been up to since the Stand Apart EP?

Kim: We toured and wrote for the new album and not much else.

Pauli: Your videos always seem to be of top-quality and tell a story and are great pieces of work on their own merits. Will we be seeing a video for the single?

Kim: Yes! We’ll be filming in the coming week actually. We were a little behind schedule as the studio time went a week over.

Pauli: So you’ve spent a lot of time in the studio lately. Do you enjoy the recording process?

Kim: I love the studio, I especially love the moment you uncover a new idea, that banging in your chest you get when something special comes along… it’s still the same now, 3 albums in.

Pauli: Do you enjoy recording as much or more than touring?

Kim: They are 2 very different animals. Live is about connecting with other people via the song, Studio is meeting the music . I love them equally.

Pauli: Speaking of touring, tickets for that While You Wait tour are on sale now. Will the tour include a sneak peak of the new album?

Kim: We’ll be hand selecting a couple of new songs off the album for sure – we need to show people these songs!

Pauli: The While You Wait tour is a more intimate, up close show than you’ve done previously. What’s your reason for doing this?

Kim: We talked and unanimously thought it would be amazing to go back to some venues like where we began the journey and start fresh there with the new album and then see where we end up by new years. We love the sweaty packed club show vibe, when you think back to your career those gigs are definitely some of your fondest memories.

Pauli: Have you finished the next album?

Kim: I literally sung the last vocal yesterday.

Pauli: When will it be released & what can we expect to hear?

Kim: It’s scheduled for an August release and you can expect a broadening of the band’s sound with some forays into some fresh new directions as well as our signature sound.

Pauli: This Is The Warning and The Catalyst Fire were both huge successes. Does this put pressure on the next album to be better or more successful?

Kim: First and foremost we write to please ourselves and the outline for that goal is to be constantly evolving and moving forward as songwriters in our journey. The biggest challenge we set was to not fall back into the things we’ve become very good at it out of comfort or ease when uncovering a song.

Pauli: What have Dead Letter Circus got planned after the single tour and for the rest of the year?

Kim: We’ll head overseas for a while and then head back for a killer album tour!

Pauli: Do you think the band has changed much in the last 10 years?

Kim: Definitely as musicians, because we grew and learnt. Not really as people though as we are the same daggy guys we were then who somehow write this serious music.

Pauli: Where would you like to see the band in another 10 years’ time?

Kim: NOT a judge on The Voice. Hahaha

Pauli: Thanks for taking the time to speak to AMNplify. Good luck with the tour, with the album and everything happening personally as well.

Kim: Cheers mate.
