Perth band J.F.K were to release their new single Lovers this week ahead of tomorrow night’s show at Jack Rabbit Slims. However, A Boy and A Boy was too close to lead singer James Knox’s heart to let it slide and they decided that now was the right time to release this one instead.

When I first sat down to write this review…I sat looking at the screen for ages trying to figure out how I can review it without getting all political. I mean….the song itself is absolutely fantastic. It’s everything that we have come to expect from a J.F.K. song. They have the ability to turn any subject matter into a fun, catchy song that just makes you want to dance and jump around like an idiot while singing at the top of your lungs. That talent in itself is just something to be admired and applauded.

I realised very quickly that to NOT get political was taking the cowardly line. The song after all was written after Knox was made to feel less than human – all because he was having dinner with his boyfriend, his partner…his lover and no one should be made to feel like that – just because of who they happen to love. The reason that they decided to release this song now was in because of all the anti-yes ads that have been aired on television right now….and of course the fact that it is a killer tune.

So not only does this song have a powerful message of simply wanting to be accepted and to have their relationship recognised by law by being able to get married but J.F.K have done it in the best way that they know how – by being so catchy that it gets stuck in your head. So screw the no vote. Vote yes so that we all have equality. You can’t help who you fall in love with. And I can’t help falling in love with this song.
