JANE WEAVER – “Modern Kosmology” (Album Review)

Jane Weaver has always been an anomaly, from her early days with Brit pop outfit Kill Laura & the formation of her folktronica project Misty Dixon to her work as a solo artist, she has managed to blend electronic music, folk, psychedelia & alternative pop with ease and carve out her own signature sound in the process.

Weaver’s 2014 album Silver Globe garnered critical acclaim and opened up a whole new universe of fans to her experimental songwriting and facilitated the release of an expanded version of the LP titled The Amber Light featuring an eclectic mix of collaborators including synth pioneer Suzanne Ciani & Tom Furse from indie rock shoegazers The Horrors. She is about to release her seventh studio album Modern Kosmology on Fire Records.

One of Weaver’s talents is using her distinctive melodic voice to complement the more muscular elements of her sound, mainly synthesizers & guitars. This is evident on the opening track, H>A>K where her magnetic vocals flow effortlessly around an undercurrent of analogue synthesizers (and some extremely precise drumming) culminating in a kraut rock jam that sounds like it is being transmitted from outer space. The futurist theme keeps flowing on the first single, Slow Motion where Weaver sings ‘In this landscape we are fading, shiny particles and shadings, once continuous and clear, through the skies’ suggesting that we are only mere specks in the universe. There is a sophisticated ambiguity to her lyrics which has mirrored the themes in her music over the years and Modern Kosmology is built on the same foundation.

Much like her peers Stereolab, Weaver combines vocal harmonies with elements of lounge music & 60’s pop to give her sound an otherworldly dimension. Did You See Butterflies encapsulates this beautifully with an alt pop twist and title track Modern Kosmology inhabits a sci-fi lounge atmosphere that is both retro & futuristic at the same time spanning a light year of micro-pysch genres in just over 5 minutes. The controls are set for the heart of the sun on The Architect – an energising blast of celestial pop with Weaver in its centre, amidst a battery of analogue synths and some of the most ferocious drumming on the album.  Other highlights include the rhythmically minimal The Lightning Back with its subtle 70’s style synth flourishes and I Wish  – a starkly uplifting and conventional pop song that closes the album on an optimistic note.
