Jet’s show differed from all the other gigs that I’ve seen at the Zoo Twilights. I, like you, envisioned a relaxed evening laying on a picnic rug adorned with a cheese platter, watching the sunset whilst being serenaded. Once the sun was barely visible and the familiar baseline from Get What You Need was carried through the air, the audience had no choice but to stand.

It’s been years since their latest release, but Jet still present quintessential rock ’n roll characteristics. Jet are a band that demand your attention. I wasn’t mad that after working a 10-hour shift on my feet I had to stand for even longer, because Jet are so damn fun.

In true character, frontman Nic Cester only broke the silence to announce “we’re going to save some fucking bandicoots”, which had the same effect as when the house lights come on after a show at the theatre. You were immediately yet briefly removed from the trance of the rock show and reminded of your surroundings: a fundraiser for zoo animals.

The band rolled through hits such as Skin & Bone and Seventeen only to reach the climax with Are You Gonna Be My Girl. It was abundantly clear that it was the hit everyone was anticipating. I was certain that this would be the conclusion of the gig (how can you top that track?!) but Jet aloofly carried on to remind us that they are not, in fact, a one-hit wonder band. I felt foolish for ever doubting them.

After the set resolved, I was prepared to hear the “one more song” chant, although this never eventuated. Instead, the crowd began chanting, nay, demanding Cold Hard Bitch. Right on queue, the band returned to the stage to conclude their encore with none other than Cold Hard Bitch. As the tambourine was still ringing in my ears all I could think was that I hope it’s not as long between gigs this time. I have no doubt that I was not alone in this desire.
