Kiama native Joe Mungovan looks to end the year off with a bang by releasing his third EP on 1 December 2017. Entitled, ‘Another Night, A Distance From Here’, Mungovan seeks to build on the success of his sophomore EP ‘Way Down South’ which debuted at #2 on iTunes’ singer-songwriter charts.
After crashing his skateboard at 13, Joe Mungovan was left in a wheelchair for four months and unable to play his beloved drum kit. During this turbulent time, Mungovan taught himself guitar and developed a unique style that blends folk and pop together.
Off the bat, Mungovan teases listeners with finger picked guitars which builds layer by layer in his opening track, ‘Prescribe Me’. The vocal work and harmonies that lure us in, as well as the catchy hook are classic Mungovan. Atmospheric and spacey ambience, well-reverbed vocals along with a beat that’ll make your grandma crip walk – it’s clear these elements are ingrained in the EP. These elements are most evident in ‘#1 Fan’, ‘Shoot Me Down’, ‘Freefallin’ and ‘Playing with Fire’.

‘Stepping Outta Line’ is a killer track that lays out some great electronic sounds accompanied by a captivating vocal hook. Mungovan adds a bit of attitude and scratch in his vocal tone that’s quasi pop-punk. The diversity of instrumentation, as well as the catchy melody found in this track is what’ll keep the listener coming back for more.
Mungovan wraps up his EP with the reflective and melancholy ‘Figure Out Myself’. Lyrically emotional with a touch of brass goodness, the vocal hook mixed with the 4/4 beat is like the pavlova dessert we have longed for after a hearty good meal.
All in all, ‘Another Night, A Distance from Here’ is a winner. Mungovan uses his unique blend of indie folk and pop, enhanced by his seasoned singer/songwriter sensibilities to create something magical – and we as listeners have the amazing privilege to be a part of that magic.
