Josh Setterfield – From Dusk (EP Review)

Josh Setterfield - From Dusk

The name Josh Setterfield is a new name to country music. The former front man of pop punk band Call The Shots has gone solo. He is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with two pop/rock country EPs to his name already.

With influences of Florida Georgia Line and Brantley Gilbert, Setterfield released his sophomore EP, From Dusk, just prior to Christmas last year. It follows on from his debut release Live It Up. Across three tracks, Setterfield has delivered an EP that he wrote, recorded, mixed and produced himself. It debuted at #3 on the iTunes country charts and continues to garner success.

Infectious and upbeat best describes the EP opener, My Kind of Saturday Night. The track has short and sharp phrasing. Yet, it is the clever tempo changes and the raspy vocal delivery that combine to deliver a sexy country anthem. Setterfield’s guitar work on this track is also noteworthy, giving an added dimension to an already catchy opener.

The lead single, Hometown, comes next – an introspective ballad showcasing the light and shade of Setterfield’s vocals; that have an undeniable country twang to them. It is a track that would work just as well acoustically, given the imagery of sitting around an open fire or on the beach that can easily be conjured up by the listener.

The EP closes with the lead single, Feelin’ Love – a summer slow jam about young love. It is melodic and pop hook-laden, allowing the commonplace rasp and country twang of Setterfield’s full vocal range to be on display. The classy musicianship on this track is also omnipresent to the ear of the listener.

Just one listen to From Dusk and it is abundantly clear – Josh Setterfield was always meant to be on the pop/rock country music scene. In just three tracks, he has created something earnest and memorable. The success Setterfield continues to receive is well warranted and this release is a class above in all things indie music. The anticipation for a potential full length release one day is palpable. If Live It Up and From Dusk are anything to go by, it will be something truly special.
