LAKYN

(Single Review)

“West”

A native New Zealander, Lakyn first started making music when a broken ankle kept him off his skate board. The following years were filled with appearing on The Voice Australia, creating his first acoustic EP, and a crash course in production and some pretty intense self-reflection.

‘View Looks So Good’Lakyn’s first release this year, has clocked up over 650,000 Spotify plays and was played by triple j and community radio. The pop/rock/indie artist spends a lot of his time in an imaginary world; one where life doesn’t get in the way of reflections and shadows that most people would walk right past.  When he writes music, he sees little pictures and films in his head, which is then imbued with his own emotions, memories, and views. While listening to Lakyn’s music, you can see a bit of Lakyn’s world- filled with childlike curiosity and ingenuity.

LAKYN // WEST

.

‘West’ is Lakyn’s recent release only aired this week on Triple J’s Home and Hosed show, and it is a unique song with several genres seeping through different sounds.  Lakyn’s strong bluesy/rock/pop vocals over the top of rattling western guitar and a catchy drum-beat make ‘West’ a song with layers of skillful musicality throughout.

.

‘West’ is about Lakyn’s own ambition and self-worth – it’s about not getting too comfortable in any one place, and always pushing yourself to work harder, to do better.

.

I have listened to the fresh track on repeat since its release, and I also had the treat of hearing ‘West’ live first-hand last night during his performance supporting on the Vera Blue national tour!

The song opens with a groovy almost hip-hop beat, and Lakyn’s smooth soulful vocals sing the lyrics

.

“I wish you could see what see in you. I’m doing me and you keep doing you.”

.

This sets the tone for the bluesy verses with witty lyrics that build to the chorus, which has more of a pop/rock vibe and simpler lyrics easy enough to sing-a-long to;

.

“Messing with the pieces. The pieces. I’m just doing me, you keep doing you. Iron out the creases, the creases. I wish you could see what I see in you.”

.

It was magic watching Lakyn perform his new track ‘West’ live opening for Vera Blue at The Triffid Friday the 25th of August. You can tell Lakyn really connects with the song as he strums the guitar flawlessly creating those western vibes, and his vocals were strong emphasising lyrics where he felt appropriate for the live show.
