Brisbane indie rock, four-piece Last Dinosaurs dropped a new single on the 20th of February, the first taste from their upcoming LP. The lead single,  ‘Dominos’, frankly, is a masterclass of indie rock, rife with expansive and adventurous guitaring, yet tempered by smooth vocals, an infectious baseline and a tight beat. The first release from the group since 2015 release  Wellness, it’s an ultra-catchy yet simple song. This is not to disparage the song or Last Dinosaurs;  catchy, simplistic music that isn’t cheap, autotuned or overproduced, is difficult to create. A twice repeated chorus, working to the first verse, a pre chorus and then the chorus again, the lyrical structure of the song is unpretentious, while the instrumentation adds a layer of indie rock complexity that is typical of the band.

The section of the song that stands out, particularly lyrically, is the bridge, before the last choruses. The verses and chorus detail a low point of overwhelming anxiety and powerlessness, while the bridge offers something of a call-to-arms to take action and turn things around. This feeling is apparent in the slow drop to soft, stilted electric chords of the chorus before the electric guitars, drums and bass soar triumphantly in the last chorus iteration before the closing line; “I know it’s only a phase.”

Lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Sean Caskey, describes ‘Dominos’ as a piece of a larger swathe of experiences and the ups and downs of life, that, seemingly, will be explored on their impending third album. If ‘Dominos’ is just a piece of a larger thematic or conceptually based LP, it’s fair to say that the band’s forthcoming release will be tracked with great anticipation and eagerness.
