Florida’s favourite pop-punk quintet MAYDAY PARADE are currently in OZ rocking out in numerous venues in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their iconic cult classic debut album A Lesson In Romantics.

.

“We are stoked to celebrate our 10th anniversary of our debut record A Lesson in Romantics,” guitarist Brooks Betts says. “We want to reminisce on the memory with our fans. Especially with those who have been with us for so many years.”

.

MAYDAY PARADE has amassed one of the most loyal and avid fan bases in their 12 years of vitality, making them a global force. Their energizing live shows and beloved hits are adored by many, with hits like ‘Jamie All Over’, ‘Miserable At Best’ and ‘Jersey’ propelling their success from the get go.

It’s crazy to think that Mayday Parade have been at it for so long and impacted numerous people along the way. While the anniversary for their debut album A Lesson In Romantics is a celebration of the band’s early beginnings, you could also depict it to be a tribute to the dedicated fanbase as well. It might of come as a shock to fellow Australians when it was announced that Mayday Parade were bringing the 10yr anniversary tour down under – but fans flocked to venues to hear the album in full and somewhat reflect how the album impacted them. There’s no denying that the majority of fans in Eatons Hill were former myspace kids who clung to this album. It was as though A Lesson In Romantics was only released a few short months ago – really the only way of knowing it wasn’t is based around the song titles (You don’t see titles of songs that long these days do you?).

Just like clockwork, it seems as though any gig booked at Eatons Hill leads to a downpour and bad weather; but it didn’t stop fans from lining up early. Drenched and eagerly waiting, fans hid under parking shelters before entering the venue and by the end of the night there was no way of telling if fans were drenched from the rain or the sweat from the pit.

MAYDAY PARADE brought along acoustic duo THIS WILD LIFE! The Cali-born internet sensation took the world by storm after the release of their critically acclaimed debut album Clouded.  Returning to Australia with their sophomore album Low Tides in tow, This Wild Life captivated the audience from the get go. Crowds were still barging through the door when speakers erupted with Disney classic Under The Sea; lights dimmed and This Wild Life emerged. The California crooners played singles from their discography includingConcrete and History. Playing an array of songs from their most recent releases as well as a few older jingles left fans captivated as members Kevin Jordan and Anthony Del Grosso graced the stage for an impeccable set. It’s safe to say their fanbase grew a little bigger when Kevin Jordan tugged at fans heartstrings telling the crowd thatPuppy Love was indeed about his dog.

The night progressed and Mayday Parade emerged on stage as though they were greeting us fondly like we were old friends. Smiles never faded and the so called pep in members steps never diminished.

As they played through the album, there was a noticeable difference from the original studio release – a certain ‘rockier’ vibe / sound was in place as it was quite apparent from the numerous guitar riff throughout the set. While it wasn’t edgier per-say, it somewhat felt it was needed and left fans content in what they were watching. Instruments simmered down and Sanders performed solely for songs such as Miserable at Best with his keyboard and renditioned a cover of Something Corporate’s Punk Rock Princess with an acoustic guitar. The shift from guitar riffs to a lone instrument communicated perfectly (somewhat rhythmatic) the juxtaposition between experiences that helped shape the album. There is no denying I saw a few people shed some tears in the crowd on the night. For instance when Mayday played fan favourite ‘You Be the Anchor That Keeps My Feet on the Ground, I’ll Be the Wings That Keep Your Heart in the Clouds’ – it most definitely tugged on heartstrings.

The Florida quintet ran through all 12 tracks from A Lesson In Romantics but the night was not over yet. Mayday continued to please the crowd playing hits such as ‘Three Cheers For Five Years’ ‘Terrible Things’ and ‘Kids In Love’.

Like always the crowd couldn’t get enough, and as always when fans thought the band ended their set, the venue echoed with fans chanting ‘One More Song!’ While it took some time for everyone to be in unison with their chants, to the crowds approval, Mayday Parade graced the stage one last time to end on ‘Stay’, and Mayday Parade graced the stage one last time to end on Stay, andOh Well, Oh Well, their classic farewell tune.

Mayday Parade are one of the few bands who constantly deliver and keep on coming back to Australia; unlike other artists who tour nation every few years.  As the crowd at Eatons Hill celebrated over the anniversary of A Lesson In Romantics, singer; Derek Sanders promised to come back and tour Australia – even jokingly stating he hoped to see everyone in this room in ten years time for the 20 year anniversary. Mayday Parade are a band.
