MERPIRE – Holding Breath (Single Review)

Merpire

.

Sydney multi-instrumentalist Merpire has decided to take her sound in a different direction according to her new track Holding Breath. Ditching the acoustic sound, Merpire has gone with a more electronica infused pop.

Merpire’s signing is my favourite aspect of the track, starting out fairly easy going at the start but still having that vitality to it; especially on the “save her” lines, coming off incredibly strong. Though I felt the climaxes of the chorus needed to be met with more force to get a goosebumps worthy performance.

The production is fairly good. The warped accordion that plays as the songs foundations is an great textured sound, especially when the distorted bass line comes in with it. The drums work well, sounding at their best when the symbols are clashing about. The strings are nice though with their legato transitions between notes they feel to work against the rest of the instrumentation. Overall though I would’ve liked to have heard a more extravagant climax to track with a couple more orchestral layers and possibly a more lavish drum beat.

As far as the lyrics go, the song presents itself as a relationship that’s seems to be one sided. Though they are quite straight forward it’s interestingly written from a pleading third party perspective.

Merpire is still only small and growing, and this track is a good indication she’s going in a good solid direction with her sound. You can check out the video clip for a previous track of Merpire’s below, Mister Hurrahtio .
