In this industry and this era, you don’t often see something you’ve never seen before. Something that makes you take a step back. Barefoot and blazing, the uniqueness that is The MoreDidge Brothers did this for me. Performing a wild but intimate show at The Indi Bar in Scarborough, the quartet created the perfect harmony between half a dozen genres. Blues first and foremost, but also Roots, Spanish, Rock, and even Reggae. So much of so many different things that it was nothing like anything else. Some possible influences I did pick up on were as far ranging as the beats of Spiderbait’s Black Betty and Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi accompanied by the vocals of a more rustic sounding James Blunt. I think this shows the diversity and extreme range of talent. The MoreDidge Brothers drew an older crowd, all of which were care-free spirits dancing in a very flower-power, 70’s kind of way.

The MoreDidge Brothers, having strong ties to the Noongar community in Rockingham WA, use the didgeridoo (about seven of them) as an integral part of their performance. They strongly emphasise the use of the instrument both in their sound and in their marketing, often using clever tag-lines such as There will be MoreDidge or Didge. Drum. Dance. The didge is played by the newest member of the band, the friendly and adorable Fiorino Fiorini. Hailing from Italy, Fiorini learned to play the instrument at a very young age and runs an annual didgeridoo festival back home. He has as many different techniques for playing the instrument as he has different versions of them. The MoreDidge Brothers’ array of instruments also included acoustic guitars, bass guitar, the drums, maracas, a loop pedal and even a whistle to provide a very multi-cultural, multi-talented show. I never thought I’d see a whistle used in such a purposeful, musical way. Or see a whistle on stage at all!

The band made several successful attempts to engage with the audience and prove their individuality and memorability including having a “percussion off” between drummer Tim Watkins and the drummer in the opening band. Safe to say MoreDidge came out on top, with Watkins’ energy levels through the roof and his technique on point. Other memorable moments included lead singer and guitarist Aiden Varro encouraging the crowd to echo back lyrics and sounds back to him. This was a good way to make the audience vocal on the back of their newly-released debut album Royal Tea, having not had a lot of time to learn lyrics. Judging by their presence and enthusiasm for the band, the crowd is sure to know every word by their next performance. Not much beats a bass guitar solo and Nate Lansdell crushed this one, while the finger work on Varro on his twelve-string guitar also makes a very worthy mention. The vocalists’ strong connection with the audience all throughout, his unique voice, and his standing and playing on the drum kit to conclude the set makes him a stand out performer.

One thing I can say for all The MoreDidge Brothers is that their tremendous energy remained throughout the entire performance. Each member concluded the set with just as much passion as they commenced it. Fiorini’s hand gestures and subtle dance moves, Tim’s head-banging, Nate’s surfing stance and commitment to his instrument and Aiden’s all-around connectivity remained 100% at all times. The guys each all hugged each other afterwards, showing the true mateship on display on top of the musicality. The band and their album are something to watch out for in future as they continue to dominate pubs and music festivals around WA and the rest of Australia.
