Peter Senior has had a big year, first coming to prominence with his breakthrough track Cool Ride, he followed that success with Baby I Love You and the surprise hit of the 2018 festive season The Christmas Tree. It’s perhaps easy to understand why audiences are taking to Peter’s brand of nouveau retro pop-rock; it’s refreshingly untainted by hubris and conceit. It adopts the sounds of an amalgam of eras and blends them with a dash of humour, some superb piano skills and a voice that’s convincing, engaging and vaguely familiar in a sense that it’s reminiscent of other artists such as Michael Bublé, Billy Joel and Jamie Cullum. This track is no exception in terms of stylistic zeal, kicking off with a piano flourish that’s immediately transportive, readying the listener to be whisked off to an alternate plane—and alternate it certainly is. This track is one part Motown (the stomping, four on the floor feel, the horns, the soaring background vocalists, the good time air), one part Billy Joel (one can’t hear that stomp without being reminded of Uptown Girl) and another part Peter Senior.

Despite the aspects of all these other musical influences, it soon becomes apparent that Peter has, yes, very carefully and adroitly adopted some of the same nuances and essential attributes but has managed to align them with his own carefree spirit and characteristics and idiosyncrasies. The result is a genre-defying slice of freewheeling theatrical swagger and highly palatable good old fashioned pop fun. The lyric explores nothing earth-shatteringly new but who’s to say such humble supplications and declarations of love aren’t as imperative as other concepts? There is no doubt that Little Lovin is going to turn out to be the surprise hit of this summer’s end, and after only one listen, to certain sections of the wider general public, that won’t be such a surprise.
