Project Description

Q & A with This Crooked Home

Long Island-based alternative pop punk quintet This Crooked Home like the simple things in life – coffee, parties, Chris’ dog Scotty, retro video games, writing songs, playing songs and listening to songs.

The band features Chris Carlson (vocals), Nate Rose (guitar/backing vocals), Derek Sitler (guitar), Lucas Mersten(bass/backing vocals) and Roy Kupferberg (drums) and they deliver the astute listener … a sound of loud guitars, meaningful lyrics and memorable hooks.

This Crooked Home has a great track out called Done With Being Hopeless and recently had a chat with AMNplify– check it out!

How and when did the band form?

Chris: The band was formed in the summer of 2016. I had been searching for a line-up for quite some time. I knew Derek from another band he used to play with and always admired his guitar playing. So we got together and it just clicked.

I also knew Lucas from another band called Hands Down. Most of the members went away for school, so I jumped at the opportunity to recruit him.

As for Nate, I had never met him before but he messaged me asking if he could try out after seeing a post on Facebook. We immediately became good friends, almost as if we already knew each other. So we knew we had the right group of guys.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

Chris: Wow … there are so many! For me although it is outside the pop punk realm, I am a die-hard Foo Fighters fan. I started out as a drummer and Dave Grohl definitely gave me the courage to step out from behind the drums and grab the mic.

Who are your main musical influences?

Once again, there are so many to choose from. We are all big fans of the newer bands out there like State Champs, Knuckle Puck and Real Friends but we also love the older stuff like Taking Back Sunday and All Time Low.

What inspired Done With Being Hopeless?

This song is just about continuing to do what you love, despite what other people may think. Even if no one believes in you, all that matters is that you believe in yourself.

What inspires your song writing more broadly?

Chris: Confusion, regret, tragedy, euphoria; the future and the past, my dog Scotty and the unknown.

Have you or do you have any plans to release an EP/LP this year?

Yes we do! We are currently recording our debut EP now! Details on a release will be announced soon!

What makes This Crooked Home different to similar sounding bands?

Derek: I think we give a spin on the traditional sound most bands put out in this genre. We focus a lot on melody and memorable hooks, but try to stay away from overused and cliché chord progressions that have just been beaten to death. On top of that, our singer Chris has a pretty unique voice; haven’t really heard anyone who sounds like him.

What has been your most memorable career highlight to date?

Probably our first show; we played 89 North in Patchogue, NY. Walking out on stage sure was a trip. We all had played shows before, but something in that moment just felt like everything had finally fell into place and all our hard work finally paying off.

What is something you would like to achieve career-wise that you haven’t done yet?

Nate: Once our EP is released we’ll be embarking on our first tour and we’re pretty stoked! That’s definitely something we’re all looking forward to!

If you could play any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

Lucas: I’d definitely have to go with Madison Square Garden. It’s an iconic venue that has been the epicentre for New York artists and international artists.
