Ever afraid of complacency, stadium rock titans U2 have waited only 13 days since the release of their latest album (Songs Of Experience) to put forth another musical offering. In U2’s‘Spotify Singles’listeners are treated to an alternate mix of album cut ‘The Little Things That Give You Away’ and a cover of Marvin Gaye’s soul classic ‘What’s Going On.’
Recorded at Neptune Valley in LA, opening track ‘The Little Things That Give You Away’ offers a stripped back version of the atmospheric number, trading in delay-laden guitars for a piano lead. Conceptualized as a conversation between a life-weary individual and his younger self, the song builds gradually before exploding into an incendiary outro.
The second and only other track, ‘What’s Going On’, sees The Edge’s trademark delay substituted for a wah pedal and Bono trying his hand at a soul lead. Whilst missing the saxophone present in the original, the cover is a pleasant tribute to a Motown great.
