TARA FAVELL – ‘Wild Heart’ (EP Review)

Tara Favell is Australia’s next big name in country music. The singer-songwriter, originally from Canberra, now resides in Sydney and has been performing and songwriting since she was 14. Her latest release, the Wild Heart EP really captures a fresh country pop cross over sound and reflects Favell’s raw and honest storytelling – stories about heartbreak, vulnerability and the naivety to the rollercoaster of emotions that couple with chasing a dream.
The EP opens with Fast; that has a melodic vocal delivery. Favell’s unmistakable country twang permeates throughout and gives the track a warm texture whilst the lyric content makes it highly relatable to the listener. Somewhat unexpected distorted guitar chords greet the listener on Lighter, providing a nice change up to the country vibes. It becomes more folk-inspired after this whilst gravitating toward both the atmospheric and pop throughout.

Following this is the duet with Josh Setterfield called Starting Over, cleverly giving the listener two perspectives on the same story. It is pure country that echoes the vibes of Kelsea Ballerini in lyric content and musicality. The guitar chords are syrup-like, showcasing the light and shade in Favell’s vocals whilst Setterfield’s vocals add depth to the track.
The up-tempo Nothing Like You comes next and it’s catchy from the first chord. Lyrically, it sounds like Avril Lavigne’s ‘Complicated’. It is a highly relatable too, with the listener able to bring their own experiences to the track. The EP closes with lead single, Heart-Break. It is the antithesis of the previous track in terms of tempo, with the vocal delivery being atmospheric with a good dose of country pop.

.
Tara Favell’s Wild Heart EP is on par with her American-based counterparts – polished and classy. Favell’s fresh twist on the country pop cross over comes through in both her honest songwriting and choice of guitar chord from song to song. She is inspired by others, but has a sound that’s all her own. Wild Heart really appears to epitomise Favell’s life these past 12-18 months – wild in spirit and in learning from her experiences.
