After years of hearing The Getaway Plan covers at pretty much every local pop-punk show, the band themselves finally returned to Adelaide on Friday night to bless our ears by playing Other Voices, Other Rooms in FULL. With two sets to play, The Getaway Plan got straight to the point with only one support act. Touring with another great Melbourne band, Harbours, the boys graced the stage of The Gov to give us all of those throwback feels.

Harbours can do no wrong in my eyes, and Friday night’s performance definitely proved that. Kicking off the set with their hit track, ‘Flicker and Fade’, the boys showed The Gov exactly why they were chosen to be the only support for the show. Despite having possibly the most awkward, crammed stage set up, all five guys kept the audience engaged with an entertaining stage presence. All five members are so entertaining to watch that I don’t think I even blinked during the entire set.

While the stage set up was painfully crammed to look at, it gave us all a much better look at Kristian Evagelistis, who’s drumming expertise often gets overlooked when he’s hiding at the back of the stage. Touring with the band for a second time this year, Shaun Fuller has done an excellent job of filling the void left in our hearts following the departure of previous guitarist, Sam Bassal, making up for what he lacks in the luscious locks department with great skill and a killer stage presence.

These guys produce some certified bangers, with thought provoking lyrics and the passionate vocals of Tory Robertson backed by the instrumental perfection of Kyle, Thomas, Kristian and now Shaun. Harbours are SO damn underrated and you should definitely check them out if you weren’t lucky enough to see one of their killer sets on this tour.

Next up, The Getaway Plan took to the stage performing ‘The Reckoning’, which instantly sent the crowd into nostalgic hysteria. The massive 19-song performance saw the band play every song we wanted (Where The City Meets The Sea) and 18 more. In all seriousness, despite Other Voices, Other Rooms being a decade old in February, the guys in The Getaway Plan have still got it.

Matthew Wright’s unforgettable voice instantly took us straight back to the band’s prime, with the same talent that blessed us with Where The City Meets The Sea all those years ago.

Playing the entire Other Voices, Other Rooms album meant that all of the tracks we know and love like ‘Streetlight’, ‘Red Flag’ and ‘Entr’acte were all included in the set, accompanied by other great songs like ‘Move Along’ and ‘Dark Horses’. If all your favourite The Getaway Plan tracks (and some more) wasn’t enough to satisfy you, they also performed a killer cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ that had me prematurely crying over Stevie Nicks future Adelaide show.

To see an album that is in lots of peoples’ top 5 come to live on stage at The Gov was an incredible experience. I went into the show expecting a fun throwback show, but what took me by surprise was the pure talent of these guys. From Clint Owen Ellis’ incredible guitar skills and Mike and Dan Maio’s bass and drum talent, The Getaway Plan are as talented as they were ten years ago.

For a band that hasn’t released new music since 2013, the 4-piece alternative rockers pulled a truly impressive crowd. By the end of the night the crowd were left begging for the ultimate throwback band to release some new tunes and re-enter the scene.
