Witnessing a band perform during their tour in celebration of 15 years is generally an honour for any audience member. However, what Thirsty Merc proved to their fans throughout their entire show for their Take Me Back Tour, was that they were the ones who were thankful for the ongoing support over the years.

Starting off the night in Sydney’s Manning Bar were energetic support act Papaya Tree, a Sydney six piece eclectic group bursting with jazz, funk and rock beats. Their attire including jumpsuits, ‘vote for Pedro’ t-shirts and a collaboration of trumpets and saxophones were just a funky and fun way to start off the night.  Followed by Dean Ray with his acoustic sounds and constant enthusiasm to prep the crowd for what was to come next.

It was then time for Thirsty Merc to hit the stage and the crowd couldn’t contain themselves as they started chanting before the band even made an appearance. Each member walked on stage with their classic rock image. Front man Rai Thistlethwayte stood centred with his luscious locks and shades as the Aussie rock band eased the crowd into their 2004 released hit song, My Completeness.

Just when you thought the beginning of the night had reached its peak, Thirsty Merc strummed out the intro to their world known track In The Summertime. Even a few sound tech issues weren’t getting in the way of this one, especially seeing as the entire venue sung along to the lyrics.

The night was a monumental moment commending their 15 years of impressive tracks in which the band gathered song requests from their social media followers. Hit tracks played on the night included Someday, Small Time Politics, Those Eyes, along with a variety of others.

Throughout the night Thistlethwayte expressed his thanks on behalf of the band and looked truly touched to see the crowd’s reaction of consistent swaying and enthusiasm over the night. Thirsty Merc finished off the set with 20 Good Reasons and Emancipate Myself before thanking the crowd once again and bowing to finish off the positive vibes in the room.

The night was a true testament of why this Aussie rock band is still around 15 years later. Their phenomenal talent and humble comments of appreciation made it obvious as to why they have ongoing support from their fans and we can only hope to see them tour again in the near future.
