It almost becomes impossible to acknowledge the outside world when you are in the presence of a band like Thursday. It becomes irrelevant to ponder what is taking place on the roads and pathways of George Street just outside the doors of The Metro Theatre in Sydney. The only focus on last night was what it meant to the true fans who had longed for this moment since 2012. The fans who were there when it all started in 1999. The fans who listened to track after track while witnessing the development of the face that is Post- Hardcore.

THURSDAY

Starting off the night was supporting act We Set Sail from Brisbane, playing hits from albums including Feel Nothing and Animals. Followed by American 90’s hardcore band Quicksand, who delivered wicked tunes with nothing but style throughout their entire performance. The band were welcomed to Australia by a friendly audience member to which lead vocalist and guitarist Walter Schreifels spread the love with such gratitude and went on to describe how the feeling of jet lag could not and would not interfere with the excitement they felt for being in the country.

When Thursday hit the stage the crowd were well aware that they were faced with a group of legendary musicians. A group of talent who have varied in style throughout the years and played with the concept of progression in the hard rock, hardcore world. There was no denying that the ‘hardcore’ fans of Thursday have continued to support them due to the diversity in their music provided over the years. Their 2001 released album Full Collapse is the perfect example of their creativity, with ever so miniature hints of the pop genre. As opposed to their following 2003 released album War All The Time. Both of these two iconic records were the focus during last nights set, smashing out hits including Hole In The World, Signals and Steps Ascending. However, it was when lead vocalist Geoff Rickly kneeled on stage and indulged into the lyrics of This Song Brought To You By A Falling Bomb, you could feel the passion escalating in the air. There was a complete silence amongst the entire theatre during that specific moment when Rickly sung with harmony and subtlety.

You can’t ignore the musical mastery in which Thursday presents. The combination of bass and synths compliment their screamo vibe perfectly. The shifts in volume and fluctuating tempos throughout their tracks is at times, unexpected and yet it completely works. The lyrics involved are of a deeper nature and truly intensifies the overall experience when watching these guys. Thursday have never been one to shy off from the fact that they truely appreciate the bands and artists that have inspired their creativity over the years and it was when Rickly thanked Quicksand for being one of their many inspirations, you could hear the sincerity and appreciation Thursday freely portrays. I suppose we can only hope this isn’t the last we see of Thursday in terms of live shows and if it isn’t…I would highly recommend watching them.
