On Friday night, Tired Lion played one hell of a set at the University of Wollongong Unibar. The Aussie four-piece delivered a kick-ass performance, supported by local legends Raised As Wolves and The Dead Love on their extensive regional tour. Tired Lion are certainly bringing grunge back on top of the Australian rock scene.

The night began with Wollongong three-piece Raised As Wolves. Those who arrived early were treated to a blend of 90’s pop punk and rock with a melodic edge. Their punchy base lines and heavy guitars had the small crowd head banging to their tracks.

Unibar had really packed out when The Dead Love took to the stage. Their grungy power pop on songs Sugarcoat and Ordinary sent the audience into a frenzy. The band was a perfect warm up for the highly anticipated main act, and finished with a cover of Song 2 by Blur.

Lead Singer Sophie Hopes waltzed onstage with a half-full bottle of Jameson, smoke swirling in the lights behind her. She was met with screams of eager fans yelling “will you marry me?” and even “have my children!” Tired Lion immediately kicked off and sent the crowd into chaos. Their blaring guitars and aggressive yet melodic vocals ensured everybody’s heads were swaying in time to the beat of the drums.

The band played a variety of songs off their new album Dumb Days as well as bangers from previous EPs Figurine and All We Didn’t Know. It’s clear Tired Lion relish every minute onstage; their raw energy is infectious. They deliver meaningful songs about life and growing up with such a strong passion. Fans went absolutely wild during Fresh, roaring, “Disconnect my youth!” alongside singer Sophie Hopes. It was a powerful moment, a feeling of longing and connection washed over the crowd. Other highlights included I Don’t Think You Like Me and Agoraphobia.

Towards the end of the night, The Dead Love came back onstage to perform with the band for a “planned but also unplanned surprise”. Together they played Blur’s Song 2, Sophie asking the audience: “You don’t mind if you hear it again, do you?” The crowd erupted into the craziest mosh pit, with people slipping all over the wooden floorboards. Finally, Tired Lion finished with Cinderella Dracula, ending the night on an incredible high.

Overall, it was an insane performance from the Perth four piece. It won’t be long before Tired Lion are selling out bigger venues across the nation and everybody knows their name.
