TOVE STYRKE – “Say My Name” (single review)
Road trips are nothing if not for the music. Something about the movement of rubber over bitumen and the breeze out the window couple with that perfect track, the one timed to your gear changes— it’s simply magical. There’s an art to the road trip playlist, and there’s an art to the perfect road trip song. Tove Styrke has the art nailed with her new track Say My Name.
The 24-year-old Swedish singer/songwriter already has an impressive track record and an impressive pedigree. Daughter of a member of Swedish chart-topping band Max Fenders, Anders Ostman, Styrke has already released two albums and appears to be gunning for a third… along with some well-deserved international attention.
Say My Name straddles the line between groovy pop burst and indie quirk, with some R&B sentiment thrown in. It’s the soundtrack to a summer cruise under sunset neon lights— it’s carefree and fun, lyrically uncomplicated, unhurried, and euphoric in bursts.
“Say my name/wear it out like a sweater”
The chorus is whimsical and catchy, alternating Styrke’s layered harmonies with a minimalistic poppy melody. The beauty of the song lies in its contrasts, both in the choruses and between the verse and the prechorus. It’s alternately brash and coy, neither silly nor serious. It’s the Goldilocks of top-down cruise tracks, and it’s definitely going on my next road trip playlist.
Say My Name was unleashed upon global ears on April 27.
