Vera Blue – Private (Single Review)

“It keeps me up at night thinking ‘bout what you’re thinking ‘bout. Subjects in my mind, running wild, images of a parallel life …”

Private
is the new single from folk singer-songwriter turned electro pop star, Vera Blue. Born and bred in New South Wales, Celia Pavey introduced her new music project, Vera Blue to the world in 2015 and what a rollercoaster it has been! The Voice 2013 contestant released her debut EP, Fingertips under the new name in May of 2016 with her certified gold smash single Hold peaking in the Top 5 of the US/UK Spotify Topx 50 Charts and holding the number one spot on the Aussie Top 50! 2016 saw the explosive collaboration between Vera Blue and Melbourne rapper Illy, where Papercuts was born. Currently, the three-time platinum hit Papercuts has charted on the Aussie song charts for the past 221 days, peaking at number two on the iTunes charts.

Private was released on February 17th, the first 2017 single release for Vera Blue as she gears up for her US tour in March and her national single tour starting in April! Not to mention that Private is the first official single from the highly anticipated debut album set to hit our shelves in 2017.

Vera Blue is a dynamic artist, creating new sounds and new attitudes and you get this feel with Private.

She recently spoke out about the new single, giving us insight into her own world and how her past heartbreak was the force behind the track. “It’s basically about wanting someone you can’t have… You’re basically falling for someone you can’t go for… It’s the fantasy of wishing you could be with someone but you can’t.”

I’ve had the two and a half minute track on repeat and still you never know what to expect from Vera Blue as a lyricist and as a musician when her music plays. As the song quotes, “it keeps me on my toes!”. In the four line verse/bridge you receive two keyboard chords and the sweet tone of Pavey’s voice… But not for long.

The intensity that is unleashed through the power of her voice in connection with the heavy synth drop and breakdown in the chorus is ravenous. Just listen to the lyrics and they say it all. You can hear the lust and desire flow and take over through the lyrics and melody, taking you on a journey of want and need.

Whether you’re a fan (or not) of Celia Pavey or Vera Blue, Private is the perfect mix of electro-pop, lyrical artistry and soul. You can feel the intensity in every syllable sung. I can see 2017 being big for Vera Blue both locally and internationally. I’ll definitely be on the look out for her debut album, and so should you!

Private, Vera Blue. What a way to fire yourself into 2017. Check it out!
