The lights dim as the Aussie band, Bloods, step onto the stage their footsteps accompanied by the cheering and applause of the eager audience on the floor below. MC and Sweetie exchange some friendly banter with each other and the crowd in between every couple of songs that all had me bopping my head and dancing around, careful not to spill my drink. Their style reminded me very much of 90’s indie rock mixed with a little bit of the B52’s, two kinds of music that I definitely enjoy! I fell in love with their vocal harmonies and found myself singing along to songs I had just heard there and then, such as their latest single ‘Feelings’! It’s safe to say, Bloods definitely succeeded in warming up the crowd!

9:30pm comes and the lights dim once more, and judging by the volume of cheers, applause and whistles the crowd around me has grown significantly. As soon as the fierce ladies of Veruca Salt appeared onstage, the cheers got louder (which I didn’t even think was possible). The soft and mellow vocals of their song ‘Wolf’ set a relaxed mood among the crowd…..until the hook came around and the whole genre changed to hard grunge, a taste of what was to follow that night.

Watching the band play through some of their most well known songs such as ‘Museum of Broken Relationships,’ ‘Volcano Girls,’ ‘Eyes on You,’ and my personal favourite ‘Seether’,  it was hard to take my eyes off these two powerful vocalists because as they performed each song, I could tell how much they enjoyed and loved what they were doing under the bright stage lights of the Metro Theatre. Looking around at the faces of those who stood with me in the crowd, it was obvious that they loved Veruca Salt and their music, attending every show since 1997. Louise Post and Nina Gordon are kinda like the cool grunge rocker mums that would have jam sessions in their garage while their kids are at school and I absolutely love it. I’m so glad I got to see them perform last night! Thanks Veruca Salt for being so sweet!
