Badlands Bar is the place to be for up and coming talent and this rang true on Saturday night. The likes of Figurehead, Scarlett Drive, Choking Stanley, J.F.K, Iceage Sugar and Rashka were on board in support of leading band Young Robin on their Stay single launch. It was refreshing to see so many dreamers in one venue.

The band’s long, deliberate intro reminded me of the build up to the last song of a festival set. It was equal parts happy and suspenseful and took you right on stage with them. Serious summer vibes. This style of introduction was apparent with many of their songs.

Vocalist Jed Begho had a radiant presence about him. His dance moves were endearing, like he were at the gig himself. The quintet had an overall freshness about them and an obvious love for the art. A real emotion was demonstrated for the lyrics in the songs. The guitarists, in particular, Jarred Osborne, Ben Teune and Hamish Graham, were very concentrated on their playing, looking down at their guitars for a large part. You could tell they wanted the performance to be perfect, though their raw talent would have made sure of that regardless. The boys would have benefited from being a little bit more engaged with the audience. As the performance went on they became more relaxed and comfortable so I have no doubt a great stage dynamic will come as they continue in their rise to stardom.

Young Robin honoured their hometown with a look into the works of their anticipated EP.
Alongside their well-known tracks like Faker Faker, 2AM and Skinny Jeans, the band played a range of unreleased music. Begho even explained that they “love songs without names”. The venue’s gig room boasted a 500-person capacity, which would be difficult for even more established bands to fill out. Though the room wasn’t choc-a-block, the guys were unaffected. The energy from those there was through the roof, particularly for the song of the night Stay. The vocals came from guitarist Ben for this one. A nice mix up in sound and feel. I would have loved to have seen a cover from the guys and a drum solo from Daniel Mulch, who ties the guitar-heavy act together with his punchy beats.

Come the middle of their performance, each member of the band was jumping up and down, getting into a very infectious groove. This is when their cheerful indie-rock tunes reached their peak quality. Such passion and broad range in the vocals. Such clever use of instruments to create beats that resonate with the listener.Their songs have been engineered with great finesse. Not to mention that they sound exactly the same live. I like to refer to them as the next Tropical version of Sticky Fingers.

Ferndully followed by Get in the Air wrapped up their forty-five-minute set. Two excellent, feel-good, fittingly outro tunes. Every single body in the building was up on their feet for the final song. Jed made the crowd give themselves a round of applause. Such a sweetheart. Young Robin are delightfully genuine both as people and musicians. They deserve to blow up to be the next big thing, and I’m sure they will. I look forward to seeing what’s next from them.
