Red Bull Music Academy & Dark Mofo Present TRANSLIMINAL
Prepare to dance beyond the threshold, as Hobart City Hall is transformed into an industrial-scale transcendental rave with selectors DJ Harvey, Legowelt, Lipelis, András, Juliana Huxtable, Maurice Fulton, J’Nett, and more at Dark Mofo.
In June 2017, Red Bull Music Academy will make a return journey to Hobart as part of the Museum of Old and New Art’s Dark Mofo festival in Tasmania. The two cultural icons will reunite across two weekends, to present an industrial-scale, transcendental warehouse rave titled Transliminal; engineered for dancers to escape and let go, with DJ Harvey, Legowelt, Lipelis, András, Juliana Huxtable, Maurice Fulton, J’Nett, and more.
Programmed by Red Bull Music Academy, Transliminal invites attendees to dance beyond the threshold and worship in the temple of house & techno, as some of the world’s finest selectors bring the dark, electronic underbelly of their subterranean club scenes to Dark Mofo. Complementing the immersive sounds delivered by electronic pioneers, disorienting atmospheric light installations by Australian audio-visual artist Robin Fox will transform Hobart City Hall and heighten the dancer’s experience, making Red Bull Music Academy: Transliminal an overwhelming sensual overload.
Transliminal: Friday 9 June
English-born, Los Angeles based DJ and producer DJ Harvey will spearhead the program’s opening weekend on Friday June 9 with a five-hour voyage into the farthest depths of his famed collection. From founding illustrious weekend-long club nights in the 80s with TONKA Hi-Fi, to releasing multiple cult disco-edits, Harvey is an electronic music luminary who will challenge even the seasoned dance. Joining Harvey will be Auckland-based, world-renowned DJ Frank Booker. Booker’s highly sought edits sell out on vinyl instantly, and his DJ sets epitomise a traversing journey of disco rarities and hard-to-find re-edits.
Transliminal: Saturday 10 June
Saturday’s agenda sees Danny Wolfers aka The Netherland’s Legowelt enter the rave-cave. A trend-avoiding producer whose releases have landed with the likes of L.I.E.S, Clone and Peoples Potential Unlimited, stands as a modern-day techno icon and frontrunner of unbridled live analog performance. Joining him will be Russian L.I.E.S counterpart Lipelis, with his unconventional, acclaimed body of work, and Australia’s own András and Lorna. András, championed for his extended jaunts into wide-reaching soundscapes, will be accompanied by longtime revered Sydney DJ, radio host and producer Lorna.
Transliminal: Friday 16 June
New York-based House of Ladosha member and mixed-media artist, Juliana Huxtable, will play at Transliminal on Friday June 16, appearing alongside Melbourne techno contingent Chiara Kickdrum, DJ Kiti and Brooke Powers. Having performed at MoMa Ps1, and set to play Red Bull Music Academy’s New York Festival in May, Juliana’s work draws from many references to focus on archiving and abstracting representations of art history, the internet, and her experience as a trans woman of colour.
Transliminal: Saturday 17 June
The Transliminal finale on Saturday June 17 sees US house pioneer, Maurice Fulton and Melbourne’s own J’Nett come together for an immersive three-hour back-to-back set. Often credited for shaping New York City’s clubbing heritage, and linked with contemporaries like Derrick May and Frankie Knuckles – Fulton’s discography and live reputation holds few comparisons for pushing boundaries and birthing new sub-genres. Sydney nightlife staple, DJ and FBi Radio presenter Adi Toohey will open the evening’s proceedings, armed with new finds from recent months spent touring Germany, the US and Canada.
Leading audio-visual artist, Robin Fox ties the audio programming together each night of Transliminal, with a bespoke set of inimitable laser composition that will draw on some of his past, celebrated works and performances in over 50 cities worldwide. From London’s Barbican, to Glasgow’s Tramway and Mona Foma in 2014, the installations which synchronise sound and visual electricity in a hyper-amplified 3D space, will next take form at Transliminal – in what’s set to be a mind-bending spectacle.
Dark Mofo once again collaborates with Red Bull Music Academy to challenge the club experience with Transliminal, and celebrate some of the world’s most forward-thinking, boundary pushing talent.
