The Steele Syndicate are all about the groove. Steele McMahon’s Brisbane-based octet is raucous, punchy and fun, with a genre-bending sound that reimagines elements of old school funk, reggae, ska and indie rock. The band packs a blistering four-piece horn section and a rhythm section to match, creating music from soulful, contemplative ballads to dance-inducing funk frenzies.
Since their formation in September 2015, The Steele Syndicate have entertained over 80,000 people at Sydney’s City2Surf road run, played at the Sydney Opera House, and a host of SouthEast Queensland’s best venues. The band are also breaking into the festival scene, appearing at the 2017 Gum Ball Music Festival, Newstead Roots Festival and headlining the Teneriffe Festival. They’re a besuited instrument-hopping unit!

Following the success of their debut EP Antipodes that received nationwide airplay on Triple J, local and community radio The Steele Syndicate are now set to release a new single in 2018. The roaring groove-infused track “Funky Trombone” will pave the way for what’s to come this year. “Funky Trombone” unleashes their evolved, energetic sound while still capturing the essence of their live show.

The single was recorded with engineer Tyson Ruth at Studio Truth in Brisbane and immediately after tracking was completed, Steele moved to Canada for 6 months. Mixing involved a lot of long-distance communication between Canada and Australia, with subsequent versions and comments sent across the ocean for review. The most significant development during this process was the creation of a punchy radio edit. The extended outro jam, which is always a hit at The Steele Syndicate’s live shows will be included in the song’s EP version later in the year.
With the entire band back in the country and a number of national dates already in the calendar, the band look forward to unleashing their EP to the world and playing shows along the East Coast finishing with a massive hometown launch at The Zoo in March.
