Each year, triple j Unearthed teams up with the National Indigenous Music Awards to unearth incredible Indigenous talent like Kuren, Thelma Plum, Philly, Robbie Miller and Zane Francis through our triple j Unearthed NIMAs competition.

With the competition now in its 6^th year, we’re super stoked to introduce you to 20 year old rapper Baker Boy. Born in Darwin and raised in the remote NT communities Milingimbi and Maningrida, Baker Boy is a quadruple threat – as a rapper, dancer, actor and graffiti artist.

Also named as one of our 2017 ‘5 Indigenous Acts You Need To Hear’, Baker Boy recently achieved his dream to be the first Indigenous artist to rap in his language, Yolngu Matha. Wanting to preserve his traditions through his art, he’s hoping to inspire younger generations to embrace their culture and become future leaders of the community.

Excited at finding a unique talent like Baker Boy, triple j Unearthed Music Director, Dave Ruby Howe, says “After Baker Boy uploaded his debut track ‘Cloud 9 {Ft. Kian}’ to Unearthed we were left awestruck. The beats are fire, the hook from Kian is killer and Baker Boy raps with confidence and charisma, sharply shifting between rapping in English and his own language. With a clear passion for supporting Indigenous communities and preserving traditional languages I reckon we’ve found the perfect artist to join the celebrations of Indigenous art and culture at the 2017 NIMAs.”

As part of Baker Boy’s prize, he’ll be flown to Darwin to perform at the National Indigenous Music Awards on Saturday 12 August, alongside some of the country’s best Indigenous performers, like A.B. Original, Dan Sultan and Emily Wurramara.
