Off the back of a hugely successful 2016 program, the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues is preparing to welcome back jazz cats, blues enthusiasts and music lovers to jitterbug and jive for another stellar festival in 2017.

Now in its 28th year and with a 2017 line-up that is sure hit all the high notes, the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues is the perfect opportunity to unwind and enjoy a jam-packed long weekend of premium jazz and blues from a stellar line-up of Australian and international musicians.

Over the ‘unofficial’ Melbourne Cup Day weekend – Friday 3 November to Sunday 5 November, festival goers will be treated to the musical delights of more than 300 musicians in over 80 concerts, across eight concert locations.

Co-artistic Director Adam Simmons says the diverse program of local artists, alongside a host of international acts and up and comers, makes this year’s program one of the strongest in the recent history of the Festival.

“The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues is Australia’s foremost festival of jazz and blues and celebrates Australian music in an international context. The 2017 line-up is a testament to this”, Mr Simmons said.

“This year’s program features more international acts, rousing collaborations and an exciting company of Wangaratta first-timers and old favourites.

“Festivalgoers will be treated to the soulful tones of New Orleans funk master Jon Cleary, two-time Edison Award-winning and Grammy nominated firebrand US trumpeter Christian Scott, 2017 Downbeat Rising Star vocalist, composer, instrumentalist and dancer Jen Shyu and will delight the musical marvels of one of Finland’s top jazz exports the Kari Ikonen Trio.

“The Australian line-up is equally strong with three of Australia’s highest profile musicians in James Morrison, Paul Grabowsky and Spiderbait’s Kram premiering their unlikely yet all-improvised trio ‘The Others’ sure to be a festival highlight.

‘We are also very excited to have the much loved Lucky Oceans make his Wangaratta debut with his Perth trio and a quintet featuring musicians from Western Australia, Victoria and Tasmania,” Mr Simmons said.

Audiences will be delighted by the quality and diversity of the 2017 program that also includes popular New Orleans infused pianist Pugsley Buzzard performing a rare show with his eight-piece group, Australian jazz guitar veterans Jim Kelly and John Scurry, blues guitarist legends Kevin Borich, Shane Pacey and Jimi Hocking, renowned maverick Barney McAll’s ASIO project, Belinda Woods’ Lo-Res as well as some of Sydney’s brightest new talents including Cope St Parade, Matilda Abraham and Frances Madden.

Festival Chair Paul Squires said the range of ticketing options ensure that all music tastes and budgets are catered for.“With ticket prices starting from as little as $80 the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues has something for everyone,” Mr Squires said. “For those after the full jazz and blues music experience, the highly sought after festival Gold Pass offers unlimited access, guaranteed seating, and no queues,” he added

An exciting change to this year’s festival will see Ford Street become the festival hub with a free community stage featuring local jazz and blues artists. In addition, St Patrick’s Church will also be a free access venue in 2017 playing host to some unusually magnificent pairings from the festival program.

“Festivalgoers will be spoilt for choice, with so many outstanding Jazz and Blues artists performing at eight venues throughout the weekend,” Mr Squires concluded.

ABOUT THE WANGARATTA FESTIVAL OF JAZZ & BLUES:

Wangaratta Jazz & Blues was originally conceived by a group of locals in 1989 as a way to attract visitors and put Wangaratta ‘on the map’. The first Festival was held in 1990. Now in its 28th year, the Festival has grown to become an internationally renowned event, attracting around 20,000 visitors each year and more than 300 Jazz and Blues artists from the USA, Europe, Asia and Australia. Wangaratta is renowned for locally grown produce and wines from the region’s family-owned vineyards.
