YOURS & OWLS FESTIVAL 2017

With the days getting longer and the nights shorter, the countdown is on until your favourite springtime festival hits the shores of Wollongong for another year of sun, tunes and booze! The team at Yours & Owls Festival have decided to ramp up the party vibes by adding an extra 2 stages to their already heaving line-up, which means double the artists to get your ears around!   
 
Celebrating the ‘gongs homegrown talent, the Rad Stage has been curated by Rad Bar venue owner Daniel Radburn, who has staged some of the town’s finest local artists, including a few of the big names on the line-up. So what can you expect from this stage? Radburn says “Genres ranging from pop to dub to hardcore as well as a couple of Wollongong’s favourite ‘out of towners’ coming to join the party. The local scene must be supported so come and check out some of the bands killing it right now before they take over the world”.
 
The weird brains and scrawny brawn behind past Y & O’s rave caves, Panoptes Palace and The Trance Mahal, are back at it again this year with BF5: Das Schmeltz Haus. Drawing inspiration from the blast furnaces of Wollongong’s heavy industries (which we think are on the up), the design this year is made of pure ‘strayan steel. You will experience well above standard atmospheric temperature and pressure, brought by a firey line up of DJs hand picked by our one and only thirsty union boss. Consider yourself warned by WHS section… get too close to blast furnace and you’ll smelt your face off. Das ist wunderbar!

Archy Punker started as the solo project of Kyle Willoughby by banging around in his backyard shed. Two years on and the project has turned itself into a combination of best mates, touring up and down the east coast with headline shows and supporting the likes of Hockey Dad, Good Boy, West Thebarton and Step Panther. You’ll be able to check out their live performance of Kiss In The Rain from their debut EP Mates Rates.

Writing songs that range thematically from being deep in the throes of heartbreak to the banality of life in a mouldy Redfern terrace, Body Type are bringing their lo-fi garage pop songs, including Ludlow & 264, to the stage. Having only played their first show in late 2016, they have since been invited to support Cate Le Bon, The Coathangers, Big Thief, Frankie Cosmos as well as performing at Gizzfest, Sydney Festival and Secret Garden.
 
Local punk/hardcore outfit Break A Leg have spent the better part of 7 years travelling up and down the east coast playing any venue or show they could, alongside the likes of Northlane, In Hearts Wake and Ur Boy Bangz, quickly gaining a reputation for their energetic and somewhat outlandish live performances. By 2015, each member was living or working in a different state so the boys decided to have one last show, selling out the Corrimal Hotel in Wollongong. 10 years since their inception BAL are blowing the dust off their gear and getting together for another final show, appearing on the Rad Stage at Yours & Owls Festival.
 
Only two years in to their conception, Brisbane three-piece Good Boy have supported the likes of Viet Cong, Homeshake, British India, The John Steel Singers, Jonathan Boulet, Velociraptor, Palms, Northeast Party House, took out the triple j unearthed Laneway Festival competition, opening the Brisbane Laneway main stage to a huge crowd, and got added to high rotation on triple j with their debut single Transparency. After touring with Japandroids and ending 2016 in style playing Festival Of The Sun and Falls Festival, Good Boy have no plans to slow down, releasing a split 7 inch with Melbourne wunderkind Jarrow in April, featuring single Braap.
 
Four-piece DIY alternative punk and garage rock band Hoon, have quickly carved a path through Wollongong’s local scene with their eclectic of chaotic garage punk and reckless, and highly animated live shows. The release of Hoon’s self-titled debut album has sparked the expansion of their DIY ethics resulting in the film clip for their second track Nature Boy to be premiered at the Clipped Music Video Festival at Vivid Sydney. Touring along the east coast and Indonesia with headline shows, they have also supported Dune Rats, High Tension and Clowns.
 
Jacob are a band united by their passion for cheesy emo-rock and DIY practices. Their journey has lead them to stages across the country; opening for acclaimed international acts such as Against Me!, Joyce Manor, The Hotelier and Tigers Jaw, as well as Australian favourites Luca Brasi, Ceres, Trophy Eyes and Tired Lion. They are currently hard at work, writing their second LP, and whilst the new single is not taken directly from the forthcoming album, How Long Until You’re Next to Me? sets the tone for Jacob 2.0.

Los Pintar is a raw garage rock duo from Wollongong made up of the basics – guitar, drum, male and female. Allowing their music to find its own direction through passages of distorted fuzz and drone, these two musicians can fill a room with raw emotive power making their performances events to be experienced, not simply heard.
 
Sydney four-piece Los Tones have been laying down a twang-slung vision of garage rock for the past 4 years, they run the fuzz high and hectic, and bring on surf vibes sanded into a rough-cut leather lacquer. Following tours through Europe, South America and Japan, and supporting band’s of the highest caliber – such as King Khan and the BBQ Show, Night Beats, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Thee Oh Sees – Los Tones have released their second album which include tracks What Happened and The Door

Hard rock trio from Wollongong Love Buzz, have been spending their time playing shows between Melbourne and Sydney in the last few years. Partying from the bush to the city, they have released their debut single Broken in June this year.

After being earmarked as ones to watch by Triple J with an “Unearthed Spotlight” in July 2016, RAAVE TAPES took out the 2016 Triple J Unearthed THIS THAT competition. Their lively brand of garage indie dance rock has seen the Novocastrian 3 piece perform alongside industry favourites The Gooch Palms, Hockey Dad, Andy Bull, Harts, Skeggs, Cubsport, WAAX, The Bennies, Clowns, Ecca Vandal, The Pinheads, Polish Club and a slew of local legends. Following the release of their latest single 2 u xoxo this year they kicked off a national tour, featuring an appearance at Mountain Sounds.

Raised as Wolves are a 3 piece melodic punk band from Wollongong/Sydney. Brought up and heavily influenced by the melodic edge and energy of 90’s pop punk; Raised as Wolves present a very musical brand of punk rock full of loud guitars, raucous drums and catchy choruses, as seen in 2016’s title-track Phonebook for Hokkaido. Since their inception they have shared the stage with punk and hardcore acts from all over the country including Frenzal Rhomb, The Living End, Clowns, The Bennies, Columbus, Death by Stereo, Born Lion and heaps more. 2017 has seen a slight departure from their previous sound, which will be heard in new music late in the year.
 
Melbourne-based band S M Jenkins was created by ex Step-Panther vocalist/guitarist Steve, before he enlisted a whole bunch of legends to play alongside him including Jo Syme of Big Scary on drums, Jimmy Gallagher of Dumb Punts on bass and Shanna Watson who plays for Caitlin Park on guitar. Releasing their debut EP Out There in the Zone early last year, they will be popping their Wollongong cherry at Yours & Owls Festival.
 
From the raw, roots-driven frequencies of Aotearoa (New Zealand) comes SUB-TRIBE, a three-piece electronic dub-fusion outfit with more groove than your vintage vinyl collection. From chunky skank reggae to blues drenched glitch hop, SUB-TRIBE keeps it heavy on the bass and keeps you light on your feet. Exploding onto the Sydney music scene by supporting NZ dub pioneers Salmonella Dub on their Summer tour, they released their first track Home in February this year, with plans to finalise their debut EP by summer 2018!

It’s been a big 6 months for the South Coast’s Sun Sap. Since the release of Hanging Hearts, their signature honky-tonk quirks, intoxicating swagger and woozy sun soaked riffs have seen them pick-up extensive community-radio airplay, support Polish Club and Hockey Dad and more recently sign to Harbour Agency for bookings. They’re now set to release their new single, Love Is Gone and head interstate for the first time as well as support The Ruminaters in Sydney. If Sun Sap haven’t already been on your radar, it’s about time they should be.   

Four soft punk gems from Wollongong, The Nah spans everything from melancholic indie to semi-ironic surf rock. Taking in influences by Blondie, LCD Soundsystem, SCABZ (are shit), The Roches, Talking Heads, women, trans and gender diverse songwriters, nature, science, feelings and justice.
 
Local two-piece lo-fi shed rock band TOTTY have only been together for a few months, but they have already developed a solid reputation in the Wollongong and Sydney music scene. Their debut single RIFF received triple j airplay and after releasing their second single SIGH the duo have been made a spotlight artist on the Unearthed website and added to various tastemaker playlists on Spotify.
 
Tyne-James Organ writes incredible, heartfelt songs, and is blessed with a voice to stop you in your tracks. Having created a powerful online following through his Youtube channel, Tyne has also collaborated with the likes of Allday, toured with The Beautiful Girls, Lewis Watson, and Little Sea, and sold out his debut headline tour in less than a week. Having only officially released one single, In My Arms, we predict there’ll be more than a few extra fans joining his impressive socials, and hoping to meet him after seeing him perform at Yours & Owls.
 
Following their 2016 single Get Better, three-piece White Blanks took to stages at festivals such as Shaka Fest, Yours & Owls Festival, Good Stuff, Jungle Love and Beyond The Valley. A combustion of atomic surf noise rock, it’s White Blanks’ catchy melodies and chaotic stage presence that has left audiences intoxicated and thirsty for more. With new releases just around the corner, White Blanks are set to quench!

An electronic music specialist at FBi Radio, Andy Garvey is the voice of weekly radio show Pure Space. With an ear finely tuned to the workings of the diverse local and international dance music community, Andy introduces some of the world’s most interesting electronic acts to Sydney airwaves. Off air Andy continues to light the fire under packed club floors around Australia with her eclectic mix of carefully curated tracks, warming floors for Legowelt, Florian Kupfer, Julio Bashmore, Kornel Kovacs, Jayda G, Sleep D, Mall Grab, Cyril Hahn and Anthony Naples, and is a regular fixture at Club 77, Vibe Positive and Future Classic hosted events. 
 
Ariane is a dance-floor miracle. Sharp of mind, wit and wardrobe, her style behind the decks is at once distinguishably focused and exceptionally eclectic, encompassing all spectrums of the party realm. Not to mention a big presence on the festival circuit over the last few of years, playing Splendour In The Grass, Big Day Out, Listen Out, Field Day and Outside In. True versatility is a rarity these days, however Ariane’s sound and stage presence lends itself equally to Mardi Gras, the Sydney Festival, supporting the likes of Horse Meat Disco, and playing Lil Wayne/Eminem after parties (true story).

Originally from Wollongong, DJ Elodie May is a Sydney-based writer and song selector with an ear for classic house, minimal techno and sparkly space disco. Starting out on the decks only a short while ago, this new kid to the biz is making a name for herself DJ’ing intimate house parties, secluded beach locales and boozy dim lit bars. She’s been soaking up the party scene with a lot of late nights; with a passion for music so hot it’s about ready to boil over!
 
Hailing from London, Jamie Blanco is a music producer, live artist and DJ. His DJ sets and live shows have seen him play at clubs, parties
and festivals regularly from London to Berlin, Croatia to Vietnam and recently in
 both Sydney and Melbourne. His original productions, remixes and engineer work as a
solo artist and collaborator (currently as one half of Ess O Ess) has spanned the last seven years with output featured on labels such as Future Boogie, Love On The Rocks, London Housing Trust, Not An Animal, Cynic, Tusk Wax and ENE to name a few.

Over the years Wollongong native Jon Watts (aka the sonic journeyman) has performed improvised electronics, played jazz guitar in big bands, accidentally created the revival of UK Garage in Sydney with the infamous Champain Lyf crew and has just released his first record Another View. A respected DJ Jon has been a regular fixture at House of Mince, Picnic & Heavenly parties in Sydney, Butter Sessions & Lost Weekend in Melbourne, and has played esteemed parties Pavlova Bar & Vibe Positive.
 
As a DJ Jozef Conor embodies the deep, driving, rough house, which has defined his latest production work, including his debut EP Mazyte. Jozef has taken his sound abroad for the second year running, with performances in the Philippines (Carpe Noctem Inc. Label Showcase), the established Barcelona City Hall, and Ibiza representing Melbourne’s Recovery Collective. Inspired by the scene in Europe, he also launched the Moontanned series of parties, as well as covering a diverse range of Sydney and Melbourne music hubs, including S.A.S.H, WeLove, Revolver, Tramp, and Circus Melbourne.

A wild Kato can easily be spotted in his natural habitat, the party. Whether he’s on the dance-floor with his shirt off waving that bloody tune towel around or behind the turntables mixing up the wildest records he’s managed to collect in his 20+ digging in crates all around the world. A true party connoisseur has seen Kato involved at some of the best nights and festivals Sydney has to offer including House Of Mince, Subsonic, Goodgod Super Club, Sydney Pony Club, Charades, People’s Club, Heavenly, Vibe Positive, Ghostly, Yours and Owls, Freda’s, Club 77, Spice, Field Day and his own parties Postcards From The Edge and Breakbeat Chaos.

Together as Pals, DJs Jake Walker and Ivy Whittingham run regular parties, bringing the darker side of dance music culture to Wollongong. Expect to hear the two cut swiftly between breaks, techno, bass and other sounds selected to get your head spinning.
 
Paul Jextra oscillates between studios, acoustics labs and DJ booths. Over the years he has developed a taste for off-kilter leftfield dance music and quirky Balearic-a, with a focus on the late 70s to early 90s. From island disco to South African bubble-gum, his sets are colourful and spontaneous. He made an acclaimed debut on Jen Oath Records with Coarsica EP as one half of Caravan and is also part of TLC Djs, The Listening Club, alongside Marcus King, Donnotella and Marco Vella.
 
Ravespewtin’s love of music started from early years in Siberia (Wollongong) when his old man would play air guitar in ripped y-fronts to Led Zep and Cream records. Not discovering “das klub” until later on in life, he’s learnt that it’s where all the good people are generally found, and would prefer to be on a cooking D-floor than watching master chef. He’s also part of the crew that built the Trance Mahal and Panoptes Palace at past Yours & Owls Festivals. Mainly, he’s just keen for a bag of cold cans with good crew, and giving a smoke machine a good rinse.
 
In 2015, the enigmatic Sam Weston seemed to appear out of thin-air, a seemingly fresh upstart in the Australian House-scene releasing a dusty collection of late-night/early-morning jams aptly titled Shiraz Voyager. Weston arrived on the scene and people took notice, with his rose-tinted house EP selling out within weeks. No stranger to playing live as one half of influential Sydney duo Alba, Sam’s solo live performances have gotten rave review for his ability to engage an audience and whip a room into a heaving state.

Simon Caldwell is one of a handful of DJ’s whose name adds a certain integrity to an event. Playing since the early 1990’s to beer drinkers, bum shakers and radio listeners alike, he has managed to avoid the stifling ‘style’ classification so many other DJ’s trap themselves into, keeping himself free to draw on his varied loves of deep, soulful house, techno, funk, jazz, electro, booty, hip hop and anything else which catches his ear. Simon has supported a list of internationals longer than your arm, including Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, James Brown, DJ Sotofett, The Black Madonna, Todd Terje, Rolando, Herbert, Claude Young, Maurice Fulton, Grace Jones, Derrick Carter to name just a few.
 
Somersault’s music is uncompromising. Heavily influenced by the shuffling rhythms of dark UK garage, atmospheric techno and deep melodic house, Somersault likes to straddle the line between the delirious highs and murky lows, a sound that’s brought his unique sets to outdoor festivals and underground clubs. The thunderous title track from his eagerly awaited Stampede EP, was one of the highlights of Karotte’s set at the 2016 Hafen 49 closing party in Mannheim, Germany while the sensuous B-side, It’s Erotic was selected as the opening track for veteran Roger Sanchez’s Release Yourself radio show.
 
Forged in the in the fiery depths of Mount Kembla, where many a coal miner dare not venture, Stamp Daddy and Space Gas are here on a quest to bring peace to the republic of Yours and Owls.
