Naarm-based Wergaia / Wemba Wemba woman, Alice Skye, releases her latest single “I Feel Better But I Don’t Feel Good” today via Bad Apples Music. Produced by Jen Cloher and with artwork by Prime Minister of the National Indigenous Youth Parliament, Aretha Brown, the returning track marks her first since signing with the label in June this year.

Packed with fire moulded in tender vocals, “I Feel Better But I Don’t Feel Good” finds its groove in steady percussion and stripped back piano, before taking flight in a crescendo of harmonies embraced in layered production. Emotionally transparent, Alice’s evocative words hold a hand out to those living with anxiety, and give voice to the battles fought in the face of mental challenges.

Alice says of the single: “I think mental health is gaining more visibility and less of a stigma, but there’s still a pretty general uncomfortability in sadness and showing it. If someone asks you how you are there’s the want to give a positive answer – even if that’s not the case. Or people would ask me after shows to “smile more” and “write upbeat songs” when at the time I just didn’t want to. Wanted to find less embarrassment in being honest and just saying ‘yeah it’s getting better, but it’s still hard’ or ‘sometimes I feel good, other times I don’t’ and it’s okay if you haven’t got it figured out.”

Premiered on triple j’s Home & Hosed, the single follows a big year for the indie singer/songwriter, having appeared on ABC’s Deadly Hearts compilation album with single “Speak Your Language”, performing at the Darebin Music Feast this month, and recently taking home the Emerging Artist Award at the 2019 Australian Women in Music Awards.

Alice Skye has been steadily gaining a reputation as one of Australia’s brightest new faces since releasing debut single You Are The Mountains” in 2015 and being chosen as a finalist in the triple j Unearthed NIMA competition, before going on to release “60%” in 2017 followed by a breakout BIGSOUND performance. In March 2018 she was awarded the inaugural First Peoples Emerging Artist Award, followed one month later with the release of her debut album Friends With Feelings, which caught an immediate addition to double j and saw Alice named FBi Radio’s Independent Artist of the Week and triple j Unearthed’s Feature Artist. While the title track also achieved a Spot Play addition to triple j, the acclaimed record itself has since accumulated over one million streams on Spotify and reached #10 in the Apple iTunes charts. During NAIDOC week 2018, Alice also participated in a special project alongside Ziggy Ramo and Trials, co-writing a single which also found high praise on triple j.

On stage, she has supported the likes of Benny Walker, Archie Roach, Colin Hay, Thelma Plum, Clare Bowditch and Stella Donnelly, to name a few, as well as toured her debut album with childhood friends and close bandmates, Sam and Kane King. She’s charmed crowds at the Falls Festival nationally, the 2018 NIMA Awards as triple j Unearthed competition winner, and more. Next up, Alice will be performing Lost Lands Festival, before travelling to New Orleans to take the Sounds Australia stage at the Folk Alliance International Conference in January 2020.

“I Feel Better But I Don’t Feel Good” is Alice Skye’s first single with Bad Apples Music since signing with the prolific Indigenous record label earlier in the year. Founded by Briggs, the label aims to use music as a platform for social change and fostering the talent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Steeped in success from the outset, Alice Skye’s raw musicality continues to turn heads across the country. Fans are to keep an eye out for plenty more music to come, as we try to keep up with where she’ll be headed next.
