Project Description

Interview with LAKYN (Q&A)

When Lakyn writes music, he sees little pictures and films in his head, which is then imbued with his own emotions, memories and views. The New Zealand-born Melbourne boy took time out to answer some of our questions.

Self reflection is a big reason you are able to be here today with this amazing new sound, what have you discovered about yourself throughout this journey so far?

I used to live in a world where I thought everyone and everything was against me and it was scary, once I started noticing that, I realised perception was the culprit so I started trying to view the world differently, every time I would catch myself being sour I would add a little sugar.

.

I love the fact this song can be easily translated into individual and different forms of adversity, what advice would you give to someone who wants to get to the top of that hill but may keep falling down?

Set your goals as high as you can imagine and don’t stop moving toward them, the rest is simply patience and how many times you’re willing to fall and get up. It may not feel like it at the time but “falling down” is necessary.

.

Your vinyl wall artwork (tumblr picture) is amazing with each artist being incredibly unique, who shaped the artist you are today? And do you buy a new pair of shoes everytime you chuck a vinyl on the wall?

Why thank you, oh there are way too many people to name but if I had to pick a few I would say Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley and Frank Ocean. Dylan taught me how to let my mind run free (possibly too free but I can’t turn back now), Jeff taught me how to feel and Frank taught me authenticity.

.

You have a strong fan base that has followed you for a few years now, how have you showcased your own development whilst inspiring the creativity and minds of your fans?

Development is never ending. I get bored easily and distracted even easier so I have to keep busy, I have a constant urge for new experiences and it would be selfish to keep this all to myself.

.

Having had the chance to be reflective of your journey so far what projections have you made? What does the future hold for Lakyn?

I just want to get the full planet earth experience and music is the only way I can see that happening. I just want to travel, play shows, eat good food and take it all in.

.

Talk us through the cover for view looks so good, what inspired this piece and what does it say about your album and music?

I’d have to say growing up in the 90’s inspired this. when I was 6 I remember thinking life was so exciting, being completely blown away by the simplest of things, bubbles, my shadow etc as I grew up I kept those memories in my mind because I wanted to keep them as an example of how life should be, viewing the world the same way that kid on the cover did helps me see details I don’t think I could see if I had let myself grow up.

.

Your gigs are starting back up at the end of June, what can fans expect?

These shows are just the beginning, I want to give them a taste of what’s planned ahead.

.

You should be incredibly proud of the artist and person you have and will be continue to become throughout your life, one last piece of advice for the kid with the broken ankle feeling a bit lost….

You’re far too kind. tell the kid he’s broken his ankle for reasons he won’t understand until 2027.
