Kesha’s back stronger than ever to prove everyone wrong

After a very public and brutal battle with music producer and songwriter Dr. Luke, Kesha has finally been set free to spread her wings and finally release her long awaited third studio album Rainbow. After releasing lead single Praying earlier this year, the powerful track has managed to capture the hearts of many fans as the songstress sings about her ruthless experience with Dr. Luke. Kesha also released a new promotional single each week in anticipation of her new studio album, proving that her spark and versatility are definitely still intact.

Being a huge Kesha fan from the beginning, her trashy pop number one singles such as Tik Tok  and Where R Who We R  gave her individual charm and character that pop culture was missing. Fast forward to 2017, it’s quite evident that we see Kesha in a more mature and serious light as her sound has more depth and emotion now compared to her Sleazy  party hits. As I listened to the opening song to her album Bastards, the simplicity of a guitar strung instrumental and stripped back vocals definitely highlights Kesha’s ability in a new perspective as her vocals and lyrics are now much bolder and bigger.

Let ‘Em Talk featuring Eagles of Death Metal and Woman featuring Dap-Kings Horns relate similarly with Kesha’s well-known persona of not caring about what other people think of her. These tracks provide an upbeat instrumental with many different types of instruments, as well as exploring themes such as confidence and feminism. However, getting to the fourth track Hymn, there was a drastic change of pace as the songstress explores a subtler tempo creating a feel good anthem about hope with killer vocals.

As I get to Praying, I just have to listen to the track even though I’ve heard it a million times because it’s an absolute masterpiece. This song really does create a strong lead single for the album as Kesha’s vulnerability and rawness is completely felt through her dominant vocals. Her struggle is extremely captivating to follow through the build up and climax of the track. The next track Learn To Let Go almost acts as a continuation as she still sings within the same theme as Praying, except she’s learning to let go and move on throughout a more upbeat tempo.

In the next two tracks Finding You and Rainbow, Kesha continues to keep a slow pace with similar instrumentals as she sings about love and positivity. These songs are an enjoyable progression throughout the album as the previous few tracks focused on Kesha’s pain. Once you reach tracks Hunt You Down, Boogie Feet featuring Eagles of Death Metal and Boots, Kesha brings the beat back up again as her fun side begins to reappear. She explores new sounds such as country twangs that make you want to get up and dance as she sings about certain love interests.

Old Flames (Can’t Hold a Candle To You) featuring Dolly Parton is definitely a standout on the album. The slow country beat captures both singers in a flashback back into time with their voices working surprisingly well together. They sing about a love so great that nothing will ever compare to it. In the next track, we see a bit of a humorous side with Godzilla as Kesha sings about the consequences of having a relationship with a fictional character. The last track Spaceship perfectly closes off the album as she expresses her strength in her beliefs as she finds home through a spaceship that will take her there.

Just like a rainbow having different colours, this analogy corresponds immensely with Kesha’s album as the versatility brings out many different sides of the songstress. I do believe that many of the songs sounded extremely similar, however the lyrics truly do take you on a rollercoaster journey through the different feelings and emotions that Kesha is trying to convey in each song. Her vocals are beyond out of this world and you can really embrace what the singer is feeling through each note she belts out. The standouts on the album would definitely have to be Praying for its passion and Old Flames (Can’t Hold a Candle To You) for its uniqueness. If you’re looking for an album that will surprise you track by track, Rainbow definitely has that power.
