Canberra rapper CITIZEN KAY is soaring to new heights as he prepares to deliver his new LP Belly of the Beast on August 25 ahead of a huge national tour. The charismatic wordsmith has just dropped his new single ‘Static’. Bursting with swagger and soul, this jam will have you hooked and wanting more.
The mind-bending video for ‘Static’ descends on Citizen Kay as his heart is on the brink of finally giving out. Literally. It sees Kay transcend, find some inner power, and keep pushing ahead. All themes he’s grappling with on this introspective party-track that features exciting Canberra electronic duo Mondecreen.
Citizen Kay has self-consciously developed his writing style on Belly of the Beast, and the results are both challenging and undeniably catchy. The rapper, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist has learned a lot from the impressive array of local and international talent he’s shared stages and award nominations with, and those experiences are woven throughout the record.
Sonically and musically, the record travels through layers of influences and nuances; from the laid back embrace of ‘Early’ and the vibrant sunny ‘These Kicks’ to the atmospheric heavy beats of ‘Isn’t Love’ and the hard hitting ‘Barred’, to the jazz riffing of ‘Whachu Got’ and the soulful strut of ‘Static’.
