Much-loved Melbourne-based chanteuse Megan Washington will be joining forces with The Impossible Orchestra for a special exclusive collaboration in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall at Melbourne Recital Centre on Friday 10 November. Tickets are available NOW HERE or (03) 9699 3333.
Megan Washington’s career in her homeland has already been long and distinguished. Having trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Washington first turned heads way back in 2007 when her EP Night Light – recorded in conjunction with jazz pianist Sean Foran – won the prestigious 2008 Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album. She followed that opening gambit later in 2007 with the acclaimed Bennetts Lane EP, which she created alongside legendary Australian pianist and personality Paul Grabowsky.
Next after stints playing in the backing bands of Ben Lee and Old Man River, Megan Washington turned her attention towards the commercial realms. She had immediate success when her debut solo EP Clementine (2008) gained enough traction to find her nominated for the triple j Unearthed J Award (alongside rising stars The Middle East, Seth Sentry and Philadelphia Grand Jury), landing her a spot on the then-rampant Big Day Out festival.

From there Washington’s star just kept ascending, with the title track from her 2009 EP How To Tame Lions winning the inaugural APRA/AMCOS Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition. Her debut album I Believe You Liar (2010) quickly went platinum, peaking at #3 on the ARIA Album Charts and scoring her two ARIA Awards – for Best Female Artist and Breakthrough Artist – from an incredible seven nominations.
Since those heady days Megan Washington has released the Insomnia EP (2012), which was followed by her second full-length There There (2014), the latter reaching #5 on the ARIA Album Charts and consolidating her position as one of the defining female voices of her generation.
With Washington’s late-2016 comeback single Saint Lo recently becoming her first song to reach a million plays on Spotify, she’s now returning to public performance after a lengthy hiatus for this special one-off performance will be joined by Melbourne symphonic supergroup The Impossible Orchestra.
Helmed by trombonist Brett Kelly – best known for his long-serving role in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – The Impossible Orchestra are (as their name suggests) only pulled together for special occasions. The most well-known of such events was undoubtedly the incredible, record-breaking 24-hour symphony concert marathon that they undertook at Hamer Hall in 2012 to raise funds and awareness for the Federal Government’s Care Aware campaign (and which found the #impossibleOrchestra hashtag trending globally on Twitter).
Now these two sophisticated entities are uniting for what promises to be an incredible night of word-class entertainment, with The Impossible Orchestra backing Megan Washington performing her forthcoming album in full, as well as favorites from her acclaimed studio releases. Think global, act local!
