In partnership with Mirik Milan (Night Mayor Amsterdam), EMC today share the inaugural speaker line-up set to visit Global Cities After Dark – a one-day forum focused on global night time culture and economy.
Global Cities After Dark brings together 150 delegates to hear from leading Night Time Culture and Economy specialists from around Australia and the world about the forces shaping our lives, cities and businesses. Global Cities After Dark is an invite only forum for city planners, local and state government, artistic and cultural organisations and most importantly the nightly creative leaders.
Running from 9am – 7pm on Tuesday 28 November, the one-day initiative presents inspiring keynotes from five international guests; a group workshop geared towards city success mapping; a Sydney at Night panel featuring City of Sydney and Create NSW members; and expert sessions for attendees to hone in on specialised aspects of night time culture.
The purpose of the forum is to strengthen the global network of night culture specialists, exchange knowledge, experience and best practices between cities and regional areas, and to inspire more people about the economical benefits of thriving nightlife. From nation, to city, to brand, city hall to hotel, Global Cities After Dark unravels what makes first-class Night Time Economy, and what solutions we have at hand to counter some of the major challenges of today in nightlife.

Leading the invite-only forum is a keynote address from Night Mayor of Amsterdam, Mirik Milan (Pictured Above), one of the world’s leading advocates for successful, positive and thriving nightlife, as he discusses cultivating cultural diversity and inclusiveness in building creative cities. Joining Milan from Redfern’s Giant Dwarf Theatre for additional presentations, is founder of The Creative Footprint, Lutz Leichsenring on indexing the artistic landscape of urban spaces, Kate Becker, Director of the Office of Film + Music City of Seattle on activism and external government influences, Consultant Psychiatrist & CEO, Adam Winstock on aspiring to zero harm, health and wellbeing in a city’s nightlife sector, and finally, Harvard University’s Urban Night Researcher Andreina Seijas on what we can learn from night innovations in Latin America.
A group workshop facilitated by Waterfield’s Kevin Nuttall will encourage attendees and speakers to collaborate on city success mapping, before a Sydney at Night panel discusses the current state of Sydney’s night-time economy, new initiatives in development, and how the City of Sydney and NSW Government are working together to support a vibrant, safe and sustainable night-time economy. This panel features City of Sydney and Create NSW representatives, with speakers to be announced.
Concluding the day’s program are fifteen expert sessions, allowing delegates to choose and tailor their afternoon towards specialised aspects that support positive night time culture. Carefully curated hosts and facilitators lead the sessions with insightful presentations based on their matched experiences, to encourage open discussion and shared knowledge, strategies and insights. Sessions will cover housing creativity, public health and politics, talent expansion opportunities, food as a cultural activator, the redefinition of urban space and much more, relying on host expertise in the fields of gastronomy, health and safety, mobility and public transport, legislation, urban planning, art and music. Hosts and guest experts include Mirik Milan, SLAM’s Helen Marcou, FBi Radio’s Clare Holland (Pictured Below), City of Melbourne’s Anne Malloch, James Street Initiative’s Marie-Louise Theile, Right Angle Studio’s Barrie Barton, Animals Dancing’s Andee Frost, City of Sydney’s Jess Scully and Libby Harris, Icebergs’ Maurice Terzini, street artist Baby Guerrilla, and many more.
